Poly Fill or not?

Recommended Posts

I have two Soundstream X3-182 18" subs each in their own enclosure ported. It will have a changeable vent 30 hz and 50 hz for competition. The owners manual recommends the enclosure with 3/4" MDF, coat the inside with polyester resin and a thin layer of poly fill. I am using 1" MDF, not using resin because a guy at work says it will soak through the first layer and split eventually. Should I use the poly fill or will it just blow out since each sub is 4,650 watts RMS?

Never heard of resin splitting the wood and most people on here use resin inside their boxes no problem.Including myself. The poly fill is really just to make the subs think their in a bigger enclosure than they are.If you have to use it then you can staple it to the walls or glue it and that would keep it in place

Do it. Poly-fill works great. So does egg crate foam, blackhole 5, deflex pads etc. That resin thing threw me for a loop though. Did he say it was from a temperature fluctuations? Curious. I've never heard such a thing.

I'm not sure if he was messing with me or not. I notice if I use staples into the end of MDF, it split and I see how the layers would separate., so in theory resin soaking in about 1/16 to 1/8" dries than under a lot of vibration could cause the similar effect of the wood splitting like that nail. I screw everything with wood glue. I saw steve meade resin, but he used 5 gallons of the stuff. I don't really want to use that much weight. Most of my listening will be musical and how often are you really going to listen to 9,300 watts full blast other than impressing others.
