79Bronco
Hi SMD forum I'm running 2 Kicker L5 15's in my 2010 MKV Jetta. You might be wondering how I got them to fit. Truth be told, I am tired of not being able to use my back seat. I want to move these bad boys to the trunk. I've decided on a sealed enclosure. After reading the manual for the L5 15 on Kicker's website: link It says that running 6 ft3is ideal if you have the space. You may ask why? With the ported box I currently have, I am tired of not hearing the low frequencies that I know these woofers can produce. Anything below 40 hz sounds empty, and I am looking for a flatter bass response curve. I have one big question. Is 12 cubic feet of air really a good idea? I will take the manual's word for it, but I wanted to get some good opinions. It just seems like an overwhelming amount of air space. The box they are currently in is ported and is nowhere near 12 cubic feet. Is there anything that I'm overlooking by going with a box this big? I don't want the sound to be sloppy or muddy. I've read that running a box with so much air means running less power to the speakers (750 rms vs. 450 rms) and that is fine. I have an 800 watt rms amp that will work just fine with the setup. Looking forward to reading your opinions. ear2ear
12cu ft in the back seat of a Jetta? You should measure it and the port and post your dimensions here. Omega5002
I'd do 6cu ft total, and tune to 32hz. You'll be able to fit it, and get the lows you seek. This is going in the trunk, not the back seat. Since you asked for dims: 17" tall, 37.5" wide, 39" deep. Yes, i've measured. It will fit. I'd do 6cu ft total, and tune to 32hz. You'll be able to fit it, and get the lows you seek. Looking to do a sealed box. Omega5002
If it's for sound quality, I promise you, low tuned ported box will sound better. If it's for saving space, 12 cubes doesn't sound like it Quote 2003 Kia Sorento Team Subsonic LowsTeam Bassin' on a Budget2016 Rebuild Under Construction Best score: 150.2 at 40hz (3k, 2 Custom HDC3 15's) Usaci style(door open, in the kick)
79Bronco
why sealed? I have a few reasons for choosing a sealed enclosure. vs A sealed enclosure at 6 cubic feet has a better frequency response curve than that of a vented enclosure. Also, since I'm running a vented enclosure currently, I'm losing a lot of sound under 40 hz(12db/octave) + the 12 db/octave I'm losing from the amp's subsonic filter. I want a sealed box, not a bunch of people telling me to go ported. Omega5002
Tune low, Kicker usually tunes too high, and 6 cu ft is big waste of space for 1 12' Quote 2003 Kia Sorento Team Subsonic LowsTeam Bassin' on a Budget2016 Rebuild Under Construction Best score: 150.2 at 40hz (3k, 2 Custom HDC3 15's) Usaci style(door open, in the kick)
MrSkippyJ
ported boxes (when built correctly) are MUCH better at low end response.
