Subwoofer wiring question

yes i googled and searched. im just not seeing my answer.

I have a mono amp. One 12 DVC sub 4ohm

I had a 4th order box built and the guy wired my sub in for me. he put.....

+ to the other +

- to the other -

then to the amp he put one + and one - from the same voice coil ?????wtf??? what load is that? i turned it on, it bumped but i got a smell, took the box apart and found this.

i set it to a 2ohm load

+ to the other +

- to the other -

then + from coil 1 to amp

then - from coil 2 to amp..... thats a 2 ohm load.

what the hell did he wire it to? thank god i turned it off quick.

they are both ohm loads.

+ to a + and - to - is Parallel which cuts the ohm load for each speaker in half, so that two 4Ω speakers would read 2Ω together. Also + to - and then + to - again is Series, which doubles the ohm load, so 2 4Ω speakers would read 8Ω. To me it sounds right. So you are running a 2 Ω load on your amp, are your gains set too high?

Also more info would help, how many subs, how many voice coils, if the person somehow wired up a 2 voice coil sub out of phase, then you would have problems. If the person wired up 2 separate subs out of phase, unless it is a sealed box, it won't do much harm (It could do harm, if the sub is pushing instead of pulling though). But I do understand your concern, I am still paranoid about my subs, I think I keep hearing them bottoming out, when it is just stuff vibrating.

Just using one sub. From the video look like both are correct it was a 2 ohm load. Just never seen it done like that. Gains set just about half. It's a fosgate 300 newer version. Sub was a Hifonics Brutus. Dual 4 ohm sub
