Hamood Haji Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 Hello guys today i added a big 3 upgrade on my car using 4 ga wire, i did 2 runs from the alt to the battery and 1 run for ground power from the engine groun to the battery and two other runes from the cars body to the battery, is it safe to keep them without fuses? And if with fuses what ampere should i use?

rockFord_Expedition Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 You should fuse the charge lead, since you ran two wires, you need to fuse each one. If at all possibe, you should run a single 1/0 instead of 2x 4ga. In the best case scenarios, 4g awire can carry 150amps of current and 1/0 can carry 300amps. What output is your alternator capable of? your fuse should be no greater than what the wire is capable of carrying, and no smaller than your alternators max output. Can you post pics of your work? It's good for safety in case you get into an accident and it cuts the wire or the jacket melts on something. NT_Hardcore Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 you dont need to fuse. but you should be running the same size ground as power. if u ran 2 4g wires for power you need to use 2 4g wires for the grounds.

Make sure your soldering/crimping is done right, not just so so. Add to, do not replace, the charge lead running from alternator to battery positive. Fuse this charge lead appropriately, unless you do not care about your car or anything electrical hooked up to it. Battery negative to Chasis/Frame Battery negative to engine block Some people also run a ground wire from alternator casing to frame, not necessary but dosen't hurt. Will it work without a fuse? Absolutely, asuming you hooked it up right to begin with. Adding a fuse can be a pain, and it isnt always convenient. It is a safety measure to prevent fires, and damage to electric components in your vehicle. Many people do not charge their fuse lead, and never have a problem. Many people also often drive without wearing their seatbelts and never get into wrecks. Fuse it or don't fuse it, it's your ride. Just know the risks you are taking either way.
