CNF Kevosinn Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Ok so I KNOW this has probably been covered on here so I tried searching for about 15 min to find a topic. I couldn't find anything exactly on what it is and didn't trust my google results..... could someone explain it to me or link me the topic that I probably missed? Sonic Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 C/P In short, clipping is when the amplifier is unable to produce a clean sinusoidal waveform output, and instead produces a waveform with flat peaks, or in extreme conditions, square waveform output, which sends direct current to the speakers instead of the expected AC voltage, which in turn causes heat to build across the speakers' voice coils. http://www.bcae1.com/2ltlpwr.htm

Jessica Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 It has noting to do with an amplifier. I mean yes an amplifier can clip. But a clipped signal is simply a waveform that exeeds the dynamic range of any given medium. Whether that is a cd (around 95db) or the output stage of an amplifier. Think of it like this, you want to lift something up onto a shelf that is 7ft high. You can only reach 6ft up. That is what the dynamic range is. You can only have so much signal, then it flattens out. So instead of your speakers getting a nice push pull, the get push hold pull. Sometimes clipping can be helpful in small amounts, but generally you want to avoid it. Rest in peace, walled 87 accord build log 03' Corolla build with AA Mayhem inside.
