Old School Going Back To Class

First, Merry Christmas all.

I just joined and 1st post.

I thought that I would grow out of this car audio thing but it keeps pulling me back in.

I have a small collection of "Old School" stuff and want to incorporate it into a few of my vehicles.

I am currently in Afghanistan and just doing Internet research right now.

I'm getting ready to challenge my two boys, well young men (18 & 20) to a build-off. Unfortunately it will be a long time build with me being over here but it keeps me young and "Cool" with my boys. And of course Momma just laughs at her three kids.....

My amps of choice are Kicker ZR/ZX (Old School) series.

My 1st question is; Would two Alpine Type-R 15s match up well with two Kicker ZR600s each in a 4ohm load with each amp pushing out about 850 watts RMS? That's about 100 watts above the 15s RMS ratings.

These will be going in my '94 full size Blazer that I will be restoring.

2nd question; Does anyone have experience with the Cerwin Vega Stealth SMAX 12-4 shallow mount?

I will be replacing two Solo-Baric 12s (the round ones) driven by a Kicker ZR360 in my '99 Corvette convertible.

Need to free up what little trunk space I have.

The Cerwin Vega will be going in a Stealth box driven by a Kicker ZR240 pushing about 450 watts RMS @ 2ohm load. that's about 50 watts above the CVs RMS rating.

Then the Solo-Baric 12s/ZR360 will be used in the Blazer for mid bass (80-200Hz) to balance out the Alpine 15s.

The mids and highs will be handled with a Kicker ZX460. Now to research those speakers.

The rest of the system is all Alpine.

Welcome. I've been told that today's Cerwin's are made by little children overseas and aren't the same name that they used to be, but quite honestly I don't have experience with them. That stealth stuff is tempting because of the size / price. I'd be interested in your opinion if you end up going that way.

yeah the REs should be fine, just turn the amps down a bit to make sure the subs dont blow.

yeah instead of Cerwins, made overseas (dunno if children put them together lol but its possible), I would recommend Sundown subs, or Skar subs. They're made right here in your country (by adults lol), and they have some budget lines that will EXCEED cerwins (sorry for the vs bs), but I'm a sundown and skar sub lover, they have built some top notch equipment at extremely good prices..

Oops I see that you need a shallow mount. Is it because of the front/rear space that you cannot get a regular sub in there? or is it because you're looking for a sub with deep bass but cant get enough room for a large enough box? Sundown 8's go DEEP, and so do Skars, you dont really need a 12, so the box is small. If you really need a shallow mount, I'm sure there are other makers, someone else chime in for other shallow mount subs??

that alpine gear should work fine. Have your kids register here, so they can ask questions and build tips. this is one of the best places on earth!

Will post on the Cerwin Vega Stealth when I install it. My next vacation from here will be in May. I went with it due to space requirements of the Stealth Box. It fits out of sight in the back of the Corvette. I just hope it gives decent bass when the top is down.

I talked to my boys on Christmas day and they accepted my challenge. They both think they're going to win.

you will be fine running those amps because there are other factors (voltage drop / box rise) that will bring the wattage down a little and your subs / speakers will be perfectly fine.

I'm a huge "old school" fan and a fan of the older Cerwin Vega stuff as well. -I concur on the new CV stuff. Sadly- their new stuff is NOT what the company once was.

Welcome to smd sir. And what you got should sound great. What's wrong with being oldschool. I'm an older dude and if people don't like that I'm jammin harder than the young ones it's there problem not mine. Car audio for life with me. Been in car audio from 14 years old to nobodys bz. 2loud - your words are like a sermon in my ears!! Yeah I got lucky, cause a few years after I popped outta my egg, car amplifiers started coming into the markets. The Old School ones! And yeah they were made VERY well. I have like 30 old school amps, Orion, Zapco, Harman Kardon, Carver, Monitor, Ampire, etc etc. I trust their sound (class A/B) will be good.I use them when I can.

Those old Kicker amps kick ass. You'll like them.
