My buddy and I are making a product for our college senior project. We have decided on mountain bike handlebars with built in LED headlights along with a helmet with built in headlights. We understand that there are products that are out there like this; that's OK - our designs can stand on their own in terms of other people's patents. We have a few design aspects we are looking for feedback on... -Light beam angle and reach -Preferred handlebar material -How much you'd be willing to pay for handlebars and helmet as a package -Any other ideas or concerns (except strength... we've got that covered!) -Any cool colors you'd like to see? bcpballer64 Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 I think white LEDs would obviously work best, for beam and angle LEDs are terrible at this so your best bet would probably be to look into some sort of projector lens to spread out the light more usefully. I would think also you would want light all the way down to where your tire touches and as far out ahead as feasible. As far as getting the beam projections, I think the best bet for us will be to construct reflective housings (lenses are complex!). Either way, thanks for the input. And Cortez, that sounds cool, how much power does the HID setup consume? Do any of you know where to find good quality LED bulbs? CL
bcpballer64 Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 You will for sure want some CREE LEDs they are soooo much brighter. You could probably find some projector lenses and use those. Just don't get any eBay leds they are junk, I don't remember the site that has really good LEDs. CL302 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Report Posted January 23, 2013 Agreed, stem and faceplate would be easier. We interviewed a bike shop owner/professional rider today and he thought faceplace would be the way to go. That's probably the route we'll take. Problem is, there's no industry standard for bolt patterns for stem plates, so you end up either making an adapter of sorts (hard with all the variations) or a special stem/faceplate package (hard because of people's brand preferences, etc.) Still gotta find some decent LEDs...
