Skullz Posted January 23, 2013 Report Posted January 23, 2013 Mine happens to be in the pcm of my car. I have seen small metal box regulators that don't get hot but those were years ago. crunkjuice1 Posted January 23, 2013 Report Posted January 23, 2013 I have mechman EXTERNAL REGULATOR which is what most every other alt company uses a transpro 411 unit. Mine is rock solid whithout a load from idle and throughout normal driving rpm range. I set it cold start and it stays there even if it gets hot under the hood. I'm sure when it somes to some heavy basslines it will drop for a second but at the moment running just a sundown 100.4 when I raise it up a bit since I have the SMD VM-1 I notice on bass lines that the voltage actually hops up a volt for that split instance. The mechman alt EXTERNAL REGULATOR SETUP came with a harness of its own completly bypassing stock alt harness so it doesn't have anything but the POT that I manually control if I want to adjust it. Most of the unit is mostly heatsink as well so it will do well under the hood but naturally since you need to use a relay to run it you can install it in the car just be sure to use preferably 8g for wire connections especially if running a bit of a distance, but 12g and see how it goes.
