8ight Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Posted this on another site, have to ask on my favorite one as well Lately I have been wondering what gives a sub the capacity to take power. I understand it is a combination of many elements, the most obvious ones to me being the suspension, cooling, and coil. What else makes one subwoofer better than the next as far as power handling when both subs have similar specs and applications? Why do some subs, like SAs, take notoriously large amounts of power for their build? I know there are a lot of people here who may know something I don't, I'd love to be filled in on the subject. If I've answered my own question or almost have let me know, if it's too much to explain I can do my research just tell me where to look. I am really curious about this. I'm gonna hate

8ight Posted February 6, 2013 Author Report Posted February 6, 2013 On the sa maybe false advertisement? Lol. I just hear alot about how 2.5" coils and big power are oil and water, then see people putting crazy amounts to their SAs. I'm gonna hate

Clarification: I know this looks like a n00b thread. I should have never mentioned anything in particular I am only looking for knowledge. This is a thread to keep opinions and anything after the fact (box design etc) out of. I'm gonna hate

Sheena Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 that is knowledge, thats literally why some subs take more power. thats why you can put a ns-1 to a pair of sa8v2s and they're fine. but heres the catch. box rise and length that you actually see people doing it. 09 Civic EX KDC-X395 (2) SKAR Audio VVX-12 Skar Audio SK-1500.1 4 cu ft @32 (new box and more port soon) Firing Forward not sealed off Stock 80 Amp Alt Big 3 In 1/0 Knu 2 Runs To The Back 1 Pos 1 Neg In 1/0 Knu DD-1'd 13.8v drop
Sheena Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 probably also companies dont know exactly the exact rms or peak rate of the subs. so they just take a safe guess from all the technology. 3 inch 4 layer coil thats 1500 safe, but people put 3k to a 1500w sub. theres a lot of factors involved. some of the subs are custom built or reconed differently. sa-12 with some extra spiders would mean mechanically the sub is good up until it reaches its thermal capabilities for the coil. just guessing, but i do believe a 3" 4 layer coil will take less power than a 3" 8 layer coil. its all about control, over excursion and bottoming out are combated by extra spiders, which allow more power which require better thermal capabilities. 2.5" 4 layer coil can take about around 1200w.. anything after that you're going to need more motor force.

Sheena Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 unclipped clean signal for short length? like 20 seconds. box rise. box rise has a HUGE impact. box rise you can rise to 7-8 ohms on a ns-1 and get around 1k watts or whatever. i havent looked on youtube, but i doubt theres a single video of someone who isnt a badass at car audio putting OVER double legit rms to a pair of sa-12s for 5 minutes of musical music that changes 2 or more tones in the bass line. theres really no point to doing that anyways, you run out of motor force on the driver at like double the rated wattage or something like that.
