I just finished installing a system in my outback, which looks very similar to your trunk space. I used a Zapco AG360 4-channel amp for the components (Focal in front and Zapco i-Force in back) at 50wrms per channel @4ohms, and a Zapco 500.1 amp 500wrms @ 2ohms to a single VVX 8" sub. Sub is a D4. I mounted the AG360 on the back of the larger seat along with the power distribution block, and the 500.1 amp on the smaller seat back. Sub sits right behind the 500.1. Its minimal, accurate, and the bass sounds really really good considering the small cone area. My one concern/gripe is that the bass does not go very loud, period. Even with 500 watts going to it, it can not keep up with components at all four corners, even while the power output of the AG360 is 200wrms. I may need to go to two subs. I can send pics if you want...

The above kinda matches my experience with an 8" stealthbox build as well, though admittedly a lot of it is the Image Dynamics ID8 being more of an SQ sub and only rated for 150 rms. It sounds great, does NOT get loud at all. Adding more power just makes it sound muddy as all Hell, and the freq roll off of the 8 in the size sealed enclosure I have (was VERY space limited) is pretty steep so it doesn't get extremely low.

I'm in the process now of building my first ported enclosure for a 12. I can hook up the stealthbox (it'll stay installed, it's out of the way) when I need my whole hatch, drop in the big box when I want to bang.

Planning a 1.98 cubic foot box tuned to 32 hz for an Obsidian Audio 12. Hopefully get that underway in a week or so.

If you don't want/need much bass a single 8" or twin 8's may work for you. If I had to make my sub choice again, I think the Sundown SD2 8 would have been a better choice, but you live and learn. If you want to bang, you're going to have to decide how much space you're willing to give up.
