Wicks
16.8v charging on a 12volt system? ok to clarify on how to find the charging voltage you put the + of the DMM on the alternator + and the - of the DMM on the negative of the battery. while the car is running of course.Correct.While running anywhere you probe is fine as long as you're not drawing a lot if current. Stock alt? 16.8v is way too high for a 12v system. Your master electrician didn't mention that? Guessing you're frying your batteries. Have the alt checked out. You sure the DMM is accurate? FYI I charge my AGM battery at 14.7v Stock charging on your truck should be 14.4v This post sent with 100% recycled electrons. 2004 BMW M3Mechman 280A 2 - XS Power XP30001 - XS Power D375 500F of Maxwell SuperCaps (soon to be 1000F) iPadMini2Dash mounted O-scopeAudison bitOne (Remote DRC MP) Highs Amp - PPI Art A404 Hertz HSK130 (HSK165 waiting...) I think thats the term, "voltage regulator" but i can't remember, I had an alt that the VR was going out on, and as it goes out it allows higher and higher voltage through, killing batteries and eventually killing your electrical system. This is just another throw at the problem, but 16.8 on a stock alt, that sounds like the problem to me. when he put 16.8 earlier today, i automaticly assumed he meant to type 14.8, lol
Bradprobert
how can i test the voltage regulator then? Tarball
how can i test the voltage regulator then? depends on if your PCM is controlling voltage or your regulator set point. if its not PCM controlled and you are charging at 16.8 then your VR is bad and you can fry both your battery and PCM. Bradprobert
I decided to revisit this thread with some new information as the problem still persist. Some of this might seem scattered just let me know on things i need to clarify. I've recently started my build and have installed the amplifier. The amp is a soundqubed 1200.1d and it works great. I highly recommend it. 1) I always turn my truck on when i start playing music and doing demos because i dont have the battery capacity to keep up while it's off. When i play full tilt on music at idle the voltage drops like the alternator is not putting out barely anything; on the other had i can play music full tilt at 1000 rpm and not have any voltage drop with even with extra accessories on such as the a/c. 2) a couple of days ago i had to pull out a charger to charge my battery in order to start the truck. It was drained like this because I did not put the battery tender on it the night before. When the battery was capable of starting the truck i started it and left the charger on it as a means of checking the charging voltage of the car. It read 14.4 volts. the meter in the dash said it was about 16 volts. Now I really don't trust the meter in the dash because for as long as i can remember the gas meter would work or not work or be somewhat off. Just to add to that every once in a while the meter inside the truck will read 14.4v. After this are there any ideas on what might be happening? From what was posted before it might be the voltage regulator that is bad just not sure. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Bradprobert
Little bump. This has been a real pain in the but and i hope i can get get it solved before any more money gets dumped into it without solving the problem. Tarball
have you done big 3? I have several other thoughts about this going on just trying to better understand your truck and how it's set up. Bradprobert
I have not yet. It's next on the list of upgrades. It shouldn't have anything to do with the problem right? I could only see it adding problems if done incorrectly, right?
