Decent under $150 amplifier for stereo

You need a preamp for that, you need to look at integrated amplifiers if you don't want 2 separate units.

yeah I kno, probably just use the Iphone as a preamp.

possibly just buy an eq then and run the iphone through the EQ

A pre-amp is a little different than a line driver, I don't think you'd have issues doing that but it's still not "right". Shouldn't matter a bit.

Yeah plus the volume control would suck...most likely the iphone will be on max volume and I could easily blow out the speakers
