blownengine
Ok here we go. This is a rear end question but I figured it went best in this section. 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 9.25 Chrysler rear axle. This is a semi-floating axle. So basically the drivers side tube seal was leaking, I went in tonight and pulled the diff cover, pulled the axle shafts, then pulled the seals and bearings on both sides. (I'm doing bearings as well since I'm already doing all this work.) Everything went super smooth until I looked inside the DRIVERS side tube. It was caked in crud, top to bottom, the entire length. The PASSENGERS side, on the other hand, was pretty spotless. I used a dowel row with a big washer nailed to the end to scrape the tube as best I could and now she is sitting in my garage, disassembled until I can get some input on this. So what could cause this? The drivers side had the leaky seal and the axle vent connection is also on the drivers side. It doesn't appear that water got into the axle. The oil was is a dark brown, which from what I have read is the correct color for used diff oil. The crud had the consistency of wet, gritty dirt. No metal chunks in the oil, just small particles from normal gear wear. With the cover pulled. What the scraper pulled from the drivers tube. It pulled this much crud with EVERY pass. Looking down the drivers tube. This doesn't show how bad it actually was. Pioneerchuck
There is a chance that the right side seal wasn't seated properly.
blownengine
That side had a very slow leak. Could it allow that much stuff in? 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT (Yea its got a Hemi)Alpine CDA-105KnuKonceptz 0ga CCA Big 3 with Yellow Top 15" SoundQubed HDC3DC Audio 1.2K (Bass)Pioneer 6x9's (Front)Pioneer 6.5's (Rear)Kicker 3.5's (Dash)Sony amp on the highs. Pioneerchuck
Over time yeah it could definitely build up that much crud in there. Just replace both seals and make sure they are seated correctly and you should be good to go.
