Carbon Fiber. Use this forum to show off your custom parts

Recommended Posts

Yes, that is true, but you being from the Race Car Scene, weight Is a very important Issue. But for the rest of the world, making a mold to duplicate a part in carbon fiber is probably not the way to go, It is very time consuming and once you finished, you will have a mold you will probably never use again, never mind the time it takes to make a perfect mold of a piece. So for cosmetics, maybe mold making is not the way to go unless they want the privelage of saying that their pieces are 100% Real Carbon Fiber.

Yes Crandis. First Look up How to wrap your own parts in Carbon Fiber in YouTube. there are several vids on this topic. then find a composite store that sells the fibers and resins you need. Buy what you can afford and start off Really Small untill you get the hang of it. Maybe try it out on an object that you don't really need just in case you fowl up. And Practice

way ahead of you. went to youtube right after seeing this so I'm watching a video. I'm doing a complete interior swap in my car so I will have PLENTY of small parts to try on :P

great work. it all looks amazing

lol sorry that might have come off a bit harsh. I come from the "racecar" side of the automotive hobby as well and sometimes get annoyed with the "rice" guys just throwing cf stickers on everything, especially when it doesn't look good like yours does. Real cf has some pretty amazing properties, and of course the look-alikes don't. For example that shroud I made weighed a pound in that rough untrimmed state but was still very stiff short of the flat middle. I feel if you are going to do something in cf, you might as well make a mold for it and make it only cf so you actually get some benefits besides being purely cosmetic.

no worries man. I'm still learning a lot. I've seem some pretty bad "racecars" out there :P mine is nowhere near that lol. I want to try that carbon fiber on some panels. some of the guys on my forum have some specially cut CF stickers for the interior, but they don't have the gloss like real CF

Hey Crandis, I cant see the link to your pics. it just shows a grey screen in photobucket

that's very odd... I shared it the way I always do. I can see it... anyway here is the direct link. it's just CF vinyl wrapped over 1/4" birch ply
