getting ready to re cone my sa-12's from d4 to d2 and Im trying to decide if I should go ahead and pay for the spl coils. How much louder are they? How much sound quality will I loose with the spl coils? Some people say they will get loud but sound like garbage. Others say they dont really sound that bad. Any thoughts?

From Jacob:

The SA-10/12/15 SPL coil is simply an 8-layer flat aluminum USA made coil -- temperature handling is much higher.

Raises the FS of the woofer; hence being labelled the SPL coil.

They are fine for daily but have less bottom end and are ONLY sold on re-cones.

The SA-8 has an SPL coil in D2 / D4 that is also okay for daily -- it's simply a 4-layer CCAW coil to drop mass... the D1 SPL coil is for burps only (very tight) and is an 8-layer flat as well.

any idea how high the spl coil raises the FS?

all thing being equal...... how much could I expect to gain from spl coils over the standard coil?
