Octavio Palencia Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 I'm told their used if you mainly play your music with the car off. They allow the alternator to charge the two batteries separate from each other, so if you drain the battery for your system, it won't allow it to start draining the battery that turns your car on. They're fairly simple to hook up, they have 3 prongs, one in the middle for your alternator, then one on each side for the separate batteries. I'm not using one, and my system has been doing fine for the past few months, as long as you be careful not to drain both batteries when the car is off. That's my opinion, it's not really needed for me.
98GCLimited Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 No you dont need an isolator to wire extra batteries to your front battery. Wire positives and negatives together this will add the capacity of the batteries together and still remain 12v. An isolator is mostly only needed if you play your stereo with the vehicle off until the batteries are discharged. The isolator will keep your front battery voltage at the proper resting voltage so you can still start your vehicle up again whereas the other batteries will be low voltage and need recharging.

But I turn off my sub amp and just listen to my mids...usually pretty quietly. IMO it would be stupid to run a system full tilt until your batteries were so depleted the stereo/amps shut off, can't be good for amp or battery health. But even still, I wouldn't do it
CXHBumpin39 Posted May 7, 2013 Author Report Posted May 7, 2013 Okay, we'll I don't play mine with the car off much so I won't need one, I also heard that it extends battery life, but it seems like it would help extend the life of the front battery but shorten the life of the rear batteries
