My buddy works with a company that instals/,aintains gps systems on catapillar equipment and had a bunch of old trimble cases lying around and asked if I wanted one. I was like sure, then I figured out a good use for it. goodvibez Posted June 22, 2013 Report Share Posted June 22, 2013 Well I got the last bit of body filler sanded where i want it on my dash and now all I have left is to do is strip all the original factory paint off. Tried sanding but it doesnt get it very well. So took some paint thinner to it and got it to start peeling. This was after sanding...couldn't get all the paint off and it looks UGLY! Used some paint thinner on it and success! It is going to take some time though because it does take some elbow grease to get it off even with chemical help. Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it. The people who criticize or try and one up you....have a p.o.s to no system at all and will tell you all about this "other" guys system! Saddley I'm sure if I meet this "other" guy...he will probably tell me he thinks your just as annoying as I think you are! I'm not compensating, just proud of fabricating! goodvibez Posted June 22, 2013 Report Share Posted June 22, 2013 So once i get it all the way down do the oem plastic then I'm going to use some of this stone gaurd paint to give it the oem plastic look so that the bondo and the rest of the dash are seemless. Then I'll paint it back to the factory color. [/url] I grabbed a piece of smooth plastic and did a few sample sprays to see how the texture will look. If you use this suff I found it works best from 2 feet away or more Some people might ask why am I going through all this work to paint it back to factory? Why not smooth it out and do some custom paint?.....I dunno...The rest of this truck doesnt look like it came that way, but I think It will look good! goodvibez Posted June 25, 2013 Report Share Posted June 25, 2013 Well Couldn't resist so today at lunch I started phase two of the dash and did the texture spray on the dash, used a whole can on the first coat. first coat came out alright but it took a while to get the hang of it, keeping the right distance while spraying is critical. So some spots varied but after work I went back and bought another can so I could throw down another coat and even out some of the trouble areas. You can notice some places I sprayed too close in the pictures above. I had a little bit left in the second can so I did more touch up, I need about anothher half can so I'll grab another can in the morning and finish it up during lunch tomorrow here is what I ended up with at the end of tonight. Couldn't resist throwing some speakers in So soon as my other paint comes in I'll paint it back to color it was, I'm wondering if I should paint the speaker grill to match the dash? Any thoughts? goodvibez Posted June 26, 2013 Report Share Posted June 26, 2013 so got something in the mail I've been waiting for The final step to finishing the dash, well except for putting it the truck which will happen tomorrow! Anyway it's the OEM matching paint. Kinda worried it wasnt going match because the cap that indicated what color it was, was actually way darker then I wanted. Did a sample spray on some plastic and turned out it matches very well ! Her you can see the sample spray side by side with the fuse panel cover which is the color I'm trying to match. So I'm going to go ahead and spray the dash..Hope it works!
