O-Scope help?

I have a portable o-scope that my grandpa gave me, and I have no idea how to use it or what settings to use...I just got my wisdom teeth out yesterday so I can't go out and see what the model is but it's a fluke handheld o-scope

Well basically use it like any other oscilloscope, you take the probe (if you have one, you should) and simply plug in the postive and negative into the positive and negative on the amp (it doesnt really matter cause oscilloscope just lets you see the waveform. You can adjust the sensitivity on the oscilloscope to make the waveform "zoom in or out". once you have it hooked up, basically turn on the amp, play a test tone (60 hz -3db) and tune the amp till it starts to clip. clipping is where the peaks of the waveform arent a sin wave, where the peak should be round, it starts to flatten. keep the waveform full sin.

About using that direct model, it shouldnt be any harder. all oscilloscopes are pretty much the same. They serve the same service.

well, not much we can help you with until we get a pic. Using one is actually very straight forward, but a specific application you want to use it for would help us help you as well.

A pic or model number would be helpful so we know what we're dealing with.

First off, without knowing that, look at the o-scope and find its input voltage rating.

You'll want to make sure that you aren't over-driving the input to the o-scope.

Smaller and cheaper o-scopes may have smaller voltage tolerances so you want to make sure that you aren't damaging the scope with what you're measuring.

After that you have basically two settings:

1.) Vertical voltage setting (V / DIV)

2.) Horizontal time setting. (t / DIV)

It helps to know what signal you're looking at so you can approximate the settings and "find" your signal and then fine tune it.

Some o-scopes have an auto-setup feature which is also very handy. You simply connect the signal and press the auto button and the scope sets itself up based on what it thinks are the best setting(s).

If you need basic operating instructions for your scope try Google search put in the make and model no. and you should find something .

YouTube should give you a basic understanding of what to use a scope for if you search how to use an oscilloscope . With a little understanding you'll soon be scoping all sorts of waveforms .

I've tried every setting and can't seem to get it right...there are like 3+ settings that you can set up the probes with...and it's the $1,500 model, my grandpa works for a pipeline company and got a new one so he gave it to me..
