securing a ground. DA BASS IS KILLING MY BASS!

Recommended Posts

ok so I go out today.... jump in the ride... start her up and get rolling... hit my control switch to turn my amp on and nothing... absolutely nothing. try it a fww times and still nothing so I get to the gas station and fill up and take a look at the ground... the ground is lose as hell... now I had it secured with a sheet metal screw to the inside of my spare tire well... I may move it to the strut tower but if I don't have enough cable I'll probably have to end up securing it to sheet metal again. so what is the best way to accomplish this... I'm thinking possibly a rivet. but I'd like to hear other options as well. any ideas.

I have a feeling you KNOW the right way, and you also know that your sheet metal screw was not good. Don't use a rivet, that's wrong. Get to a strut tower or a seat bolt. If you don't have enough wire to properly ground your amp, disconnect the power and ground from the app, as well as the remote turn on lead, until you CAN get the proper length of correct gauge wire.

The best way, since you asked, would be a GOOD chassis ground like what your under hood battery is connected to. A GOOD spot can be found by measuring a piece of metals resistance in Ohms with a DMM and as close as you can get to ZERO resistance is where you want to use as a ground location. A ring terminal, PROPERLY terminated or soldered and tightened down with a washer, lock washer and a nut. Im not familiar at all with your car specifically, I've never done an install in one. Perhaps someone else with Neon experience can chime in where they've chosen for a ground location. Unibody cars can be a little tricky to find a ground for at times.

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

I would agree with sierra. It's worth waiting to until you can spend a small amount of money on some good wire. You could risk loosing all your gear or even your ride which will set you back a lot more then some wire

Good rule of thump is go by what fuse size is being used in these amps. The higher the more amperage it pulls, this is what I look at.

I'll stick a 300 amp fuse in a potato and sell it to you for $2k.

There is a piece of metal right behind the seat you can drill a hole in and use a bolts to attach your ground to for the time being till you get enough money to get more wire to attach it to the strut tower, just make sure the ground location has been sanded to bare metal and a bolt no smaller than 1/4" x 20 for securing it cause you don't want to risk it breaking off on you.

thanks guys... I think I may even see if I can borrow the money for the cabling. and going to the strut tower. I tried actually running to the seat mount because its RIGHT THERE and it would have been absolutely perfect, But no matter what I did I couldn't seem to get a clean ground. idk why I didn't run to the tower initially I hate the idea of losing my stuff and it probably would have saved some headaches lol.

now I know that a shorter ground is best but how long is too long? because I have the amp mounted to the rare of my back seat. and I would need approximately 2 and a half or three feet maybe less but I would need that to be able to run it clean as I would like to the strut tower. would this be too long? and what would I risk making it that long? interference and nasty sounds? currently I think my ground cable might be 15 inches long if its that long at all... so this is why I ask.
