Cox Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 First things first, I know there are many variables to this, and there is no one definitive answer. I'm more looking for your guys' ideas and opinions and past experience.I blew my fi Q 15 a few weeks ago and need to get it reconed, however I was wondering if reconing it to a 12 would give me more output. The reason I'm asking this is because right now the 15 is in a 3 cubic foot box tuned to 33 hz with around 9in of port per foot. It is a 6in aero port. It faces up toward the trunk lid. I know this also loses output, but it was the only choice I had. What do you guys think the outcome would be if I reconed to a 12, and put it in a max dimension box (which is 2.5 cubic feet) and made a slot port facing the rear of the car with around 14-16 sq inches of port. I realize that the 15 is almost double the cone area of the 12 and that is the only thing I'm worried about because we all know cone area is king, however the box is also a HUGE component. I tried the best I could to not make this a vs. thread. I'm really looking for someone who has had experience with something similar. Here is a picture of the current box if that helps at all. The port is on the left. Kenwood Excelon x396AQ2200Fi Q 12XS D3400 XS XP30001/0 RADAFLEXStinger volt meter Mechman 240a alt

shogen Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 haven't gone through that... but that is my plan with my 15" xcon... the thing is you'll need a basket AND recone. ... still cheaper than buying a new 12" and you can put it in the right enclosure.. I had to go sealed to fit in my trunk, when I blow mine or just decide to do so I'll make it a 12" and port it Come on, I know someone here has dealt with this before. Cox Posted July 31, 2013 Author Report Posted July 31, 2013 On the fi website it looks as if it offers a basket for free or at least it doesn't add any cost like the spider. I'm just not so sure since I already was able to have the 15 ported, it's just toward the lower end of the air specs. shogen Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 right the box size might be toward the lower end but your port area is DEF lacking... by a very very good amount On the fi website it looks as if it offers a basket for free or at least it doesn't add any cost like the spider. Skullz Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Keep the 15 and recone it. Output has little to do with the size of the speaker, but more to do with tuning and box size, if you want output then tune to your cars rf and enjoy it. 01 Ford focus ZX3 Pioneer AVH-X491BHS PPI PC 4800.2 Morel Maximo 6.5" x2

I could make a more optimal box for it. Kenwood Excelon x396AQ2200Fi Q 12XS D3400 XS XP30001/0 RADAFLEXStinger volt meter Mechman 240a alt
Bump4life Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 my opinion, is to make the right size box. so if you cant fit a 15 inch sub in right box go down to the 12. you will prolly have better output. id almost put a 12 in that box for your 15 except for your port area being bad. efficiency and proper port is your friend.
