mirosbee23 Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 Hi was wondering if anyone knew if the sundown sa-8 would still sound good in a free air setup I bought my wife a new dart and want a better sound so I was going with massive audio 6x9 all around on a be 800.4 Hifonics and wanted to add a sub either the massive hippo 8 or sundowns 8 If yous recommend anyone 8 inch subs im up for opinions just would like some nice sq with a bit of bum
CDetty Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 Do you mean an Infinite Baffle setup? I can't really see any reason to freeair the sub instead of putting it in an enclosure. The SA-8 is a very nice sub though, they get loud and low. 1999 Honda Civic- RIP 2003 Acura RSX Type-S
Yates Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 what vehicle you could be able to build a box without invading to much of you space SA 8 has got the rep of an awesome sub if you want sq build it in a sealed box its smaller and it is better for sq and with 400watts rms you still will get bum bum
Watch the bass Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 SA 8´s working good in vented enclosures, they don´t like sealed enclosures, i don´t think that free air work well. "in the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty" Bob Marley

I have the cut out for an 8inch woofer that came factory for my dart didn't go with there alpine upgrade wanted to do something better and cleaner I want to use that existing cut out and I seen the factory setups and they have subs mounted on the rear deck just hanging in the trunk (free air no enclosure)

Im trying to use the factory 8inch sub cut out in the rear deck there was an option for the alpine 9 speaker setup but was to expensive (from dealer) figured I can make one my self way louder and cleaner im trying to see if the sa8 would sound ok free air without an enclosure.....
Kevin M Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 You could always ask in the sundown section. It really depends on the T/S parameters. If you do infinite baffle make sure you seal all the holes in the rear deck or it will have bad transient response. It does have a healthy xmax but most people who run smaller subs in IB run them in multiples. I worry that it may not be enough output for you. 9 times out of 10 it will be less than sealed. If you built a baffle you could do a 10" The whole sub doesn't need to be open through the rear deck for it to work. 2005 Ford Focus zx4 AMT's and Planars 18" Infinite baffle
john253a Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 Because the sealed size for that sub is so small you could mount a small box on it in the factory location Another option is a fi audio Ib sub And mount it to the rear wall so when you drop the seat to the trunk it there and there is no box taking up the trunk Or in the boxed out section in trunk seal both sides and do a small sealed setup with 2 or 3 8" depending on space available You should have about 4" deep x the size of seat
