riddler7812 Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 i have a set of 15" soundstream splx that smell after awhile playing. My set-up is this... 0 ga kicker and knukonceptz wiring, Big 3 upgrade, Powermax 220 amp alternator, 2 kinetik 2400's, Head unit it a panasonic 7500u dvd headunit, which leads to a clarion eqs 7 band equalizer knukoceptz rca. to a set of Powerbass 1500.1's it is wired at one ohm.. while the subs set in a wall that is about 12.35 cubic ft, with a 120 square port, tuned at 32hrtz. the box is older so i know its not the glue, or the port splatter. the subs are new, but don't think its the break in since i free aired them before putting them in.(at low volume) The amps are turned a little past quater way. so i don't think there overpowered. Any help would very much be appreciated..
SMZ2 Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 The gains on the amp are supposed to match your headunit voltage that's why a lot of guys up here use the dd1 or an oscilloscope. They make it easy to set the gains without distortion. You are more than likely clipping. If you tell us where you are located I'm sure there is a member nearby who wouldn't mind helping you set your gains. Edit: welcome to the forum! BassInMyBLood Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 to be honest I just think there still some what of a breaking in phase. because when you put a sub in a box it ends up making pressure inside the box which is different then doing it in free air. that mainly breaks in the surround and the spider leads and the suspension. but im not an expert so. BassInMyBLood Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 another thing is after you smell the smell touch the dust cap with the back of your hand, and if its hot then its a problem if its just slightly warm no biggie. AQ - SQ For Life
pioneerforlife Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 my SPLX did the same thing. it wasn't a strong smell but it was there. I know for a fact I was not clipping it which leads me to believe it was just break in but I am not positive because I only had it for like 2 months. 2007 Ford Focus SES Hatchback Pioneer HU 4 Digital Designs 9515i's in a B pillar. 2 Soundstream XXX 15K's (running at 16 volts) Soundstream Mids/Highs in custom door panels (getting rebuilt soon) Soundstream TA2.160 and TA2.400 Sky High and KNU wiring 3 Banks of Maxwell caps Winston Lithium (not a fan) Bump4Life 250 Amp Alt. aka USAlternators Soundstream Focus and Avenger Build Log Instagram @p4linnovation YouTube: Team Blowin Loud

pioneerforlife Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 ^^^^ this. I was running 1500 to mine daily and it held up fine but did smell a bit. I gave it 2K for a bit and it took it but smelled a bit more. I am almost 100% sure this is why its smelling 2007 Ford Focus SES Hatchback Pioneer HU 4 Digital Designs 9515i's in a B pillar. 2 Soundstream XXX 15K's (running at 16 volts) Soundstream Mids/Highs in custom door panels (getting rebuilt soon) Soundstream TA2.160 and TA2.400 Sky High and KNU wiring 3 Banks of Maxwell caps Winston Lithium (not a fan) Bump4Life 250 Amp Alt. aka USAlternators Soundstream Focus and Avenger Build Log Instagram @p4linnovation YouTube: Team Blowin Loud
riddler7812 Posted October 13, 2013 Author Report Posted October 13, 2013 I am using 2 of the Powerbass 1500.1 asa series but they are turned up between half to just under half way. my voltage never drops below 13 even on lower 20's hrtz. My amp isn't clipping and there by ear is no distortion. I set the levels by dmm. and the dust cap is not even luke warm. i know in a ported box your subs loose the ability to hadle its true watts its actually lower, but the amps are a true 1500, but only pushing half, so idk. It maybe break in but i had the similar smell with my l7's and the voice coils werent bad but you could tell the wear from the speaker wire, but that was a backwood install not like this one at all. So i do believe power is out, heat maybe it is a deep box.
pioneerforlife Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Also for the record setting gains with dmm doesn't work at all. 2007 Ford Focus SES Hatchback Pioneer HU 4 Digital Designs 9515i's in a B pillar. 2 Soundstream XXX 15K's (running at 16 volts) Soundstream Mids/Highs in custom door panels (getting rebuilt soon) Soundstream TA2.160 and TA2.400 Sky High and KNU wiring 3 Banks of Maxwell caps Winston Lithium (not a fan) Bump4Life 250 Amp Alt. aka USAlternators Soundstream Focus and Avenger Build Log Instagram @p4linnovation YouTube: Team Blowin Loud
