power run keeps popping fuses

Recommended Posts

it blows them once and a while. im only running the 3500 and the fuse is less then a foot away from my front battery where it should be.

Is there a characteristic time when it blows? Like only when you're playing full tilt?

Or is it random? Sitting at a street light with the system very low or off?

Is the 3500 fused itself? Are those fuse(s) blowing or just the fuse between the batteries.

Sounds like its just the under-hood fuse which leads me to believe that you have a ground fault in the wiring somewhere.

it seems like it only blows when i hit the railroad tracks on town too fast.. but then again im not sure. and the amp itself is fused yes but i have not blown that fuse yet. its just the fuse between the batteries.. and i inspected the whole 1/0 run from beginning to the end and i could not find a ground fault.. i might just buy a new positive wire run and get it over with. im going to run a negative between the 2 batteries too so i can do them at the same time. hopefully a new power run will take care of it. im stumped..

Great info.

Definitely doesn't look like the amp is faulty and drawing too much current.

Also the fact that a large jolt like the railroad tracks points to a shock-induced ground fault.

I'd say its a short somewhere that gets worse with vibration or a loose connection of some sort.

Yep, if you have it tracked down like this but its still intermittent, sometimes is best to just pull the faulty equipment out and replace it.

What does your voltage do while the "vibration" happens and blows fuses?

Have you checked/tested your batteries?

What's the chance that you have an internal short in one of the batteries?

You hit the vibration and the faulty battery shorts out momentarily and the other good battery supplies a large current to the faulty battery, blowing the fuse?

You should see a massive voltage drop if that's the case.

Just a shot in the dark if you confirmed that the power cable looks fine......

i have no idea what the volage does but on our farm we have a battery "tester" and the tester said that my back battery is weak/bad so that could be it. ill be getting a new battery in back from a shop in my town and see what happens. what you said totally makes sense though. thanks Wicks

I have a 300 amp fuse up front on my run to 3 batteries in the rear and have never had an issue.

You either have a loose ground or a slice on that positive run to the back.

Oh i know how a 12v system works I did take 3 years of electronics in High school hands on and some in college and also worked on cars in college an always got A's to B's in each class.

But oh well enough dealing with ppl who have probably not even lived as long as ive been into electronics!
