Amplifier Gains

Hi guys,

Just wondering on how much I cant actually turn the gains up without risking thermal, mechanical failure on my mids.

I have a Focal FPS 4.160 Amplifier Rated at 4x 120W @ 4 Ohms

Powering a set of Focal 80W RMS Front Splits and some 80W RMS Focal Coaxial for rear fill.

Atm I have used an 80Hz Sine wave to set a voltage of 17.8. How much more can I go.

Cheers for any help as this is my third install, also here are some pics.

Brad

Not sure I follow how you are setting the gain but first you need to know where your deck is clipping, then you can set your amp gains. Are you using an o-scope ?

CURRENT SYSTEM:

  • Alternator:
    1. Stock alt on mids/highs
    2. Isolated DC Power 270 SP - Charging @ 16.8v
  • Batteries: (2) XS D1400s
  • Power Cable: Double Runs of 1/0 KNU Kolossus Fleks
  • Headunit: 80-PRS
  • Sub Amp: DC 5.0k
  • Subwoofers: 2 RE MT 15s /PSI dual .7ohm recones
  • Subwoofer Enclosure: 9.1cubes @ 32hz - brutal.
  • Mids & Highs Amp: CT125.4
  • Active Components:
    • Mids RE XXX 6.5c
    • Highs - 3 RE XXX tweeters per side(A pillar)

Na mate got a DD1 But only used it to find when the standard headunit was clipping which is ~20 out of max 30.

Wasnt going to use DD1 to set the gains for amp as when the amp is clipping it will be well over RMS of speaker.

So I set the Headunit to 20 and put in a 80Hz track and used a DMM to measure a voltage of 17.6 which should be 80W at 4 Ohms. . . ?

No you use the dd-1 to find where your amp is clipping also

2012 Chevy sonic1xSQ HDC3 12 D2RF R1200d

140 square foot of Q-Mat(soon to be installed)

140.2Db sealed on the dash with TL

142 DB sealed on the dash with another meter (was dead on with the TL at a show i was at)

141 on music.

the DD-1 doesn't "find clipping". It doesn't care about clipping. It looks for distortion.

as far as you being way overpowered...if that is the case, use the 0db track on the amps too. Thats what i would do. If its STILL too much then you need a smaller amp.
