00' Cavalier head unit harness perplextion

TRON

Recommended Posts

I'm installing a h/u into a cavalier tomorrow so I rigged up the harness today and found something really strange. The harness is a Axxess GMRC-01 for retaining factory chimes, and the h/u is a Kenwood KDC-355U.

Here's the tricky bit: the manual from the Axxess harness says to directly connect the 12v ignition wire (RED) to the Ignition wire from the h/u, as shown in the picture. The problem is, there isn't a RED ignition wire coming out of the CAR. There is a 12v constant (YELLOW) and a ground (BLACK). There is a RED ignition wire that runs from the black box thingy to the h/u (what I'm pointing at). The PINK wire going into the black box is a phone mute.

So does this mean that the h/u will always have 12v power going to it? Normally there's three wires; 12v constant, 12v ignition(switched) and ground. I only make out two going to the h/u.

I've never worked with a Cavalier before so I'm clueless.

You're right, there is a red wire coming out of the black box...fixed that up now.

I suppose the simple thing so say would have been: There IS a red wire but it's just running between the black box and the h/u, there isn't one coming from the car's harness.

Damn, maybe the pink "Phone Mute" is incorrectly labeled? You said the Ignition wire from the column is pink.

Uh no you tske the wire from the head unit harness and you run it over to the ignition harness in the vehicle and tap into the ignition wire there. Your head unit or head unit vehicle harness do not have an ignition power source there.
