Nubster
I'm hoping to start putting together some of the things I'll need for the front half of my new system. I just got a new head unit, now I'm planning out the speakers and amp. I'm thinking at this point about ditching the 3 1/2" dash altogether and just putting something in the front door and maybe running the rear door off the head unit. Not sure yet. Anyways, I'd really like to give DIY door pods a try. I'm just not 100% on the design aspect. I'm pretty sure I can make them once I get the plan down. I'm thinking that I'll do at least one, maybe two 6" component sets in each door. I just need a little help on the best way to fit them in the space that I have and the overall design of the pods. I've thrown up a few pics of the panel I'm working with. I might even check some salvage yards to see if they have door panels and if not too much $$$, I might consider getting a second set that I can cut up. That would certainly open up the options and make things a lot easier I'm sure.
Nubster
Just to add, one other thing that makes this a pain, the door panels are one solid molded piece of plastic. Nothing pops off, not even the speaker grill. It's part of the panel.
bcbrassard
Welcome to the forum. Depending on what your goals for the system are and budget i would look at 3-way components to utilize the dash location with the tweeter in a pillars. They make 8" 3-ways you might be able to put in the doors also. If you want to fiberglass pods use part of the stock 6x9 location and the door pocket next to it. Lots of research you can do on youtube for dodge truck doors to get a better idea. Good luck and keep us posted.
Nubster
Maybe I missed them, but I couldn't find videos on Dodge doors like mine. My truck is a gen 4 and all the videos I saw were older gen 2 trucks. As far as goals, I'm after budget SQ. I know those two goals don't really go well together but that's what I'm after. Budget good clean sound. Not looking for a booming system. Been there, done that. I'll looking into the 8" 3-way. I know I can get a 6x9 in the so it should be easy to get pretty much anything in there as long as depth doesn't cause an issue.
bcbrassard
Well if your going for SQ then maybe 6.5 3-ways would be nice and easier. I am sure you know what your doing, tuned in for pics & build log for sure. Good luck & keep us posted.
mattie
If you haven't checked out Marks videos yet you should, search on youtube for CarAudioFabrication, or CAF. He's on here too.
EpicenterDesigns
Pretty sure you can do a pod that will hold 2 6.5 and 1 or 2 tweeters. I would do 1 in the door and a 2nd in the pillar. Building The Best.....Repairing The Rest The bitter after-taste of a poor quality job will last far longer than the sweetness of that cheap price!
