when designing a slot ported enclosure for 2 subs (with the port in the middle) if the port length is longer than the box depth would the remainder of the port length be split in half then go parralel to the back wall in each direction? for example my box depth is 22.25 and my port length is 37.75.

In answer to your question... yes. You're thinking about it correctly.

The width is cut in half for the back portion of the port, but not the length. If the port is 6" wide, then the back portions of the port are each 3" wide.

What Joe-X posted is correct; you do not cut L2 in half. L1+L2 is the total calculated length.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
