Best Wiring From Speaker -> Speaker Terminal

Hello all, I just got my Infinity Reference in the mail (fast shipping!).

I am wondering what sort of wire I should use to connect the speaker to the speaker terminals in the box. I used to have an Alpine and that came with the speaker so I am at a loss! Thanks!

so your asking how to wire the speakers from the inside of the box to the amp right?

if so you can do it more then one way.

1. direct, drill holes barely big enough for the wires to fit through and force them through. I did this and put a small about of glue around the wires to help make sure it was airtight. worked out great.

2. bolts nuts and washers, drill some holes and use them to connect wires from the sub to the bolts on the inside of the box then on the outside the wires going to the amp.

3. you can buy cup terminals, you just cut a whole in the box and mount it to the side. its the same as the ones you find on prefab boxes.

I would rather do option 1 or 2. 1 being the best for less resistance, might not be much difference in resistance but its my preference. 2 being a great option and one of the most used options. quick and easy. 3 is the worst idea, the material for the terminals aren't always the best and its a thin plastic filling in a hole on the box you have to cut to mount it. imo creates a weak spot and more chance of air leaks specially in bigger systems.

singer alt, tons of wiring, smd vm-1, 80prs, back seat delete, still in the works, aiming for a 145-147 with the ability to play 25hz up to 50hz.

Perfect. I was going to buy a cup terminal but not anymore!

OK, now for another beginner question, the reference has 2 positive and 2 negative terminals on opposite sides of it. Do I bridge one positive and negative and then run the remaining + and - to the amp?

what ohm coils does your sub have? Also what amp do you have?

depends on how you want to wire the sub and what amp your using.

for instance if your using an amp that is only stable down to 2 ohms you will be more limited on the wiring option depending on the sub impedance.

so what you need to do is look up the manual for the amp and see what impedance it says you can wire down to. should be either 2 or 1ohm stable, not many amps aren't stable down to 2ohm.

then look at the sub to see if its a dual 4ohm or 2ohm voice coil subwoofer. (could be dual 1ohm but I don't think infinity makes 1ohm subs) depending on the sub voice coil configuration will determine the wiring options you have, for instance if its a dual 4ohm coil you can wire to either 2 or 8ohm but if its a 2 ohm sub you can wire to either 2 or 4 ohm.

last but not least, go to google.com and type in car audio subwoofer wiring diagram. find a diagram that shows the same impedance sub with a final impedance at the amp in which your amp is stable at.

once you find the info for the amp subs and a wiring diagram post it all up here on this thread and I can confirm that it will work if you want.

Normal Impendance 2 or 8 ohms

Dual voice coil

I do not have the AMP yet

so the manual for the sub says you can wire to 2 or 8ohms?

if so look for an amp that has a matching rms rating to the sub at 2 ohms.

so if you can wire to either 2 or 8 ohm it would be a dual 4hm coil, to get a 2 ohm final impedance at the amp you do connect the negative terminals on the sub together and the positive terminals together. then run a wire from a - terminal on the sub to the amp and a - terminal on the sub to the - on the amp

post a link to the exact sub you got, we need to know the voice coil impedance to know what the final impedance at the amp would be with different ways to wire it.

Thanks for the info, do you recommend just speaker wire?
