sbg Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 So i have been running my brz 2400, (junk amp i know) on 4 ga wire. Stinger 0fc hpm. I only have 100 amp fuse on powerline. I am wired at 1ohm I dont blow the fuse and I dont drop below 13.5v full tilt. Whats the deal? I would think a amp that should pull 250 amps would pop that 100 amp fuse. If I put some 0ga ofc on the amp will I make more power? How is it that im not poping that fuse? P4killer_ Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 The fuse wont explode moment it crosses from 100a to 101a.. but with that being said you should be able to pop it with a real 2000w or above amp.. Although like I said, it likely takes a good bit more than 100a to blow the fuse. So if your 2400w amp is wired at 1 ohm nominal rising to 2ohms at the very least likely higher.. your only actually producing idk.. 1200w. 1200w / 80% efficiency = 1500w input 1500w/ 13.5v is 111a of current draw.. Not enough to blow some 100a fuses.. These numbers are rough, and your rise is likely higher meaning your output is lower, thus current draw is lower as well.. P4killer_ Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 Like I said. You aint pulling any current. Speakers are inductive in nature. Which mean the ohm load aka impedence changes with frequecy. Music is a bunch of constantly changing frequencies. Which means the actual ohm load your amp is seeing is constantly changing as well.. When your wire your amp up its seeing 1 ohm with no music playing everything off. This is called nominal impedence. Once you get music playing, your ohm load is called reactive impedence which is almost always much HIGHER than nominal. So on music your ohm load is constantly moving around a lot. You may be making 500w on certain notes 700w here, 1100w on other notes. Its complicated and has to do with many many things not limited to your car, box, and sub designs.. Note you cannot directly measure your ohm load like you would with everything shut off while the music is playing youd prolly break something please dont do that. But even on a burp scenario where you are purposely controlling the frequency or note the speaker plays. Say 40 hz. Meaning your playing 40hz and only 40hz.. Your reactive ohm load will RISE to some number and stay there roughly since your playing a constant tone of 40hz. Common impedence rise is around 3x. Meaning 3x nominal. Meaning from 1 ohm nominal when you burp, including reactive impedance rise, your amp now see 3x 1ohm = a 3 ohm load. So that amp that's rated at 2400w at 1ohm 1200w at 2 And 600 at 4 Or w.e At 3 ohms after rise you only actually sending ohhhh 800w to the sub. And that's on a burp. Music it will vary much more extremely. So in short 4 guage with a 100a fuse is plenty for 800w.. 800w / 13.5v = Only 60 amps aka why your fuse doesnt blow. My first post assumed a very generous 2x rise which isnt impossible at all, but likely isnt typical. Its prolly a lil higher. But even at 2x rise thats 2ohms Your amp at 2 ohms likely is rated for around 1200w which as I showed would likely draw around 111a of current. Which a 100a could likely survive. And again its music so even if on one note you did pull 111a, one second later on another note you might only pull have that. Because its music and your ohm load jumps around and therfore so does your amps power.. I bet your getting around 1000w right now.. If you have any questions lemme know..
