Hello this is my first post on this forum. Anyway im running a fi bl18 in a gmc envoy with a RE Ctx 4200 watt amp which RMS is 1500. The RMS matches up to the subs rms but recently i had my gain down to break them in and i was adjusting it yesterday to become louder. I was at a quarter way up before then turned it to a little bit under half. Played about 2 songs and the 3rd song in, the amp started smoking but i instantly turned it off. Everything's hooked up proper and there was no distortion whatsoever on anything. Im a little confused on why this is happening

Smoking amp is no good. You may of burnt something up like a mosfet. Did it go into protection? Did any of the wires touch? what is it grounded too?

Set your gains with a dd-1, osciliscliscope, or multimeter nothing else. Did you blow any fuses?

Everything was working fine and no wires touched. No protection mode or anything. My fuses are fine and music was playing normal but started smoking. And a bolt under the suspension. So theres no way to adjust gain properly without spending money?

yeah you need to spend money in order to save money in the future from rebuying equipment that got blown from user neglect

It shouldn't be smoking either way. Something is just wrong with the amp, I have never herd of an amp smoking because the gain was up too high. and in your case the gain most likely wasn't up too high unless maybe your deck is a 4v pre amp out put

Go buy a cheap digital multimeter at Home Depot... Gains aren't volume knobs. Watch a few video's about setting gains with a Digital Mutlimeter (DMM) on Tha YouTubes. It's simple math to figure out what voltage you need to set your gain to and whallah! Never touch your gain setting again... This isn't the best way to set your gains, but it's better than "listening for distortion" then backing it off. Since I have gone to this method, I have never blown/smoked an amp... 20-30 dollars isn't a bad investment to protect your amp's and subs you know?

no need to break in a sub first of all, second gain is not volume! 1/4 gain can be wayyyyyyy to much! I've never seen a gain go to half on any Amp I've ever owned.

dude you can get a dmm for like $15, I'm sure your dad, uncle, cousin, friend of a friend has one you Can barrow. if you don't know what your doing don't tune by ear. I've been doing this for 13years now and i still don't feel comfortable tuning by ear.

most of the time people tune by ear, they either don't turn the volume on the deck to max undistortion. and they make it as loud as possible before the subs start popping and farting. they usually clip Way before all that starts.

please go buy a dmm (at least) if you don't your gonna Keep.blowing your amps and subs. last time i checked Amps and subs cost alot more then $15 bucks!

Also could have smoked due to voltage drop. What is the electrical like in your car. Who knows it could be part of the cause
