00G Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 Hi, I have several Rockford Fosgate .5 and 1 farad capacitors, but it seems like some of them have extreme voltage drain. I can remove them from the system and charge them fully. Then I let them set overnight, when I recheck the voltages in the morning. I will see ranges from .5v to 10v most are at under 5 volts. Are these defective?
Wicks Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 All electrolytic capacitors can and will fail eventually. They rely on an internal electrolyte fluid to work properly and that fluid can be defective, degrade or evaporate, causing failure. Caps can develop shorts from overvoltages but I'd expect the short to be rather extreme and not a slow drain, but maybe. Do the caps have voltmeters or other circuitry on them? philrab Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 Hate to ask but have to; are these caps being properly charged using a resister or test light, or are you just hooking them straight up to power? If the latter, that's a really quick way to burn one down. 2015 Toyota Tacoma Build Thread 2007 Mazda 3; 5000K HID's, Kenwood Excelon KDC-X997, Infinity Reference 6.5 comps in front and coaxials in the rear doors, JL 320.4 four channel, Rab Designs built ported enclosure with an SA12, Kenwood monoblock, Redline Leater shift boot/e-brake boot/center console cover, JBR short shifter/shifter bushings/rear motor mount. If the latter, that's a really quick way to burn one down. When they are outside of the system I have only used the charge card pcb that Rockford supplied with them. On some of them I'm seeing a 10th of a volt loss every second just reading the voltage of the cap with a DMM.

Some do have voltmeters and distribution on top, but I have removed all of that during the testing.
