truthsayer Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 I was just wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt their alternator instead of buying the high dollar ones ? The following is one example. http://www.aspwholesale.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=6316 The reason i posted this was, it seems like a heck of a deal, nothing to complicated and would save you a ton of money. And it's ac/delco, so i would think it would be somewhat reliable. Any thoughts or opinions ? Edit: Here is the main page if anyone is curious to search their vehicle. http://www.aspwholesale.com/?gclid=CPzH_dnszb4CFRNcfgodLSIADg truthsayer
evermaxx Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 if it was that much cheaper.. wouldnt you think everyone else would be? research kits like that. they have next to no output at idle. and 1/2 of what its rated at 8k rpm. Team Subsonic Lows Get your garbage EMF products of my amp bitch Man....it makes a nice work bench
truthsayer Posted May 28, 2014 Author Report Posted May 28, 2014 Well i honestly think alot of people don't realize you can do it. And the one i gave example for, is rated 220 amp at 1200rpm, 240 at 1500 rpms, and 150 at 750 rpms.. truthsayer

Well if you think about it, seems to be a fair price. If you buy a new HO alt, your paying for the fancy casing, parts, labor, pulley etc and then a profit. So $150 for the kit to rebuild my particular alt seems fair. And yes i know their are crappy companies selling crap kits and alts. This particular company is reputable. And delco parts for a delco alt. Might be worth a try. truthsayer

Karkov Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 There was a couple people talking about doing it a while back, bump4life and Snowdrifter I think..... I would be curious to hear the outcome. I'm not sure what Snowdrifter has done if anything, I just know he made a thread talking about how he was thinking of trying it but I don't know if he did or not. Bump4life was looking for a 6 phase alt to take apart and figure out how it worked. Then he must have found one and posted some stuff about if I remember correctly, I'm assuming he is thinking of building his own. He builds his own cap banks so I think he wants to build his own alts? 2007 Chevy Tahoe (SOLD) 12 ~ FI Audio X series 10" w/BP option 2 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @0.67 3 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @1.0 2 ~ PPI 3 way sets (not installed yet) 1 ~ RF T400-4, 1 ~ RF T600-2, 1 ~ RF T600-4 4 ~ CT Sounds 5.25" Strato comps (rear fill only) 1 ~ XS Power D4800 1 ~ XS Power D3400 8 ~ XS Power XP3000 160 stock alt, Mechman 370 Elite, 185 DC Power 320+ Sq. And a kit coming from the Alt manufacture, i would thing it would be just as reliable as the original guts. truthsayer
Colin - STAPUFT Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 I did it. Twice. lol It is easy. Easy. EASY. Go to my build log if you are interested. It is somewhere in there. I have never had these tested to see what amperage they put out. I can tell you that I first went from a Duralast Gold 140 amp to a single 220- and the HO put the stompin' on the 140 amp. Then I added the second one and stuff really got good. HOWEVER!! Your output at idle will indeed suck. Get an overdrive pulley. My van will idle at 800 rpm- even with an overdrive pulley, in the summer (thanks to the lower idle coupled with heat soak) voltage goes to POO at 800 rpm. I had to trick my alternators with diodes to make them step up the voltage a bit. The weight of my foot on the throttle though- and ding, up comes the voltage and amperage. I don't drop below 13.5 if the motor is running around 1,200 rpm. To me- it was worth it. Because I like to mess with things and to be able to say I did it myself. 12 - 12"s in the STAY PUFT 1989 Chevy Astro Build & Comment Log Un-Interrupted Build LogYouTube Channel Chevy Trailblazer 5.1 Dolby Digital DTS Install You have a beard of a mysterious sea captain. audiofanaticz Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 I have tried 1 kit from the company for a buddies cavy, and also used parts from them to repair a older alt. Both alts seemed to work decent, but I can really only speak on the parts I got to repair an older high output unit, and that was that it didnt seem as strong as the origional builder built it (voltage wise), which could of been due to a different voltage setpoint. Majority of these kits use something cheaper compared to what the big guys are doing, and part of the reason your not getting as high as amperages in the kits. In fact from what I could tell, some of the old alt builders that have been around a while and decided not to change with the times use these same parts, or get them from the same source (at least what I noticed in my case). The prices are decent, but you got to remember your labor is time, and time is worth something as well.Sure prices are cheaper, but your not getting a case, prices would jump up a bit more if you had to buy a case, or even a core. The fact that some of the leading alternator guys are now making their own pretty casings does add to the cost, but some of these cases are why they are able to pack so much output into their alternators compared to a alt in a stock case, along with higher amperage diodes in the rectififers. Theres more to alternators than buying some $100 kit and having a high output alt, theres reasons why some manufacutres alts dont fail, than you have other guys going this route, and having almost every alt fail, or start on fire from other builders. Also just an added note, just because it says its for a delco alt, does not mean you are always getting authentic delco parts, these are normally rewound stators. Most likely you are buying a kit to fit a delco alternator. Its like buying duralast brakepads for your bmw, and saying they are bmw brake pads because they are made for your bmw (along with just about every other automobile company), but really they are duralast.
