Those that have "been there"

Never served either, couldn't due to medical reasons, so I can't relate in any way. Nevertheless, thank you to all who have served.

To keep on topic, I have known many who have been deployed and seen combat. There are two guys that get real jumpy around any sort of loud noises and I feel they could loose it at any moment. Neither have ever talked about what they did or seen, and I've never felt I had a right to ask. None of the others seem to have any issues and one kid was deployed to Iraq and had an RPG take out his HMMWV, in which he and one other were the only survivors. He still has shrapnel in his left leg and walks with a slight limp. Perhaps he's just one crazy SOB, but he loves the 4th.

Was just remarking to my wife that it's almost ten years since my last combat tour, and this is the first year I didn't spend July 4th either A. Drunk out of my mind or B. Wearing ear plugs in bed.

Still a little nervous, took a while to get to sleep, but what would you expect after 14 months of constant mortar/rocket attacks?

No experience of being in the military but fireworks do remind me of when I got shot.
