reconing a rusty sub

Is possible to recone a sub that has rust/chipped chrome plating in the magnetic gap? I have a blown AA avalanche that got wet during a flood. I thought about soaking it in a 5 gallon bucket of rust remover but im unsure if that will get the gap clean

My buddies mayhem got wet when it caught on fire and he used the hose on it

Got most of the rust out by scraping, air compressor to blow put. Tape on a wood skewer to get it out

Couldn't get it 100% but the recone lasted just fine

Pics? How bad is it? Anything loose can be taken out with some tape stuffed down the gap and wiggled around a bit.
