SQ/SQL System Recomendations-Dodge Magnum

I guess the question I have is how loud do you want to play and how good of SQ do you want? Do you want studio reference quality, loud enough to open up the doors and let the neighbors hear? That's the problem with "SQL" You have to define what "loud" to you is.

I have two sets of Alpine Type S comps, an Alpine 75x4 watt amplifier, controlled by a fosgate 360.3, a shitload of sound dampening in the vehicle, closed cell foam, all the goods and it is clean and loud.

Right, yea the same issue as always right, enough output to keep up with my sub which is ridiculously generic of a statement. I had a set of ZAPCO iforce 5.25 components and loved them actually...so I understand the environment which is to say its a car, not a studio which means I am going to be dealing with atmospherics like road noise and such. Which is why I am going with three layers of sound deadening and carpet and such so I can squeeze the output I need out of them.

So I think I am realistic in my goals. I think a good mid to high end component set in the 5.25 to 6.5 range putting out 70-100 watts RMS with a 8" midbass unit to fill in the mid-midbass part of the spectrum will work nicely. Or the other option is a 8" Midbass, 3" Mid, 1" tweet but I would have to go full active and do a lot more with the setup. I think a component set with a 8" midbass filler will be easier.

I own a chrysler 300 and I have often thought of simplify my front stage with an active two-way. If possible I may drop in the Hybrid 3" and Hybrid 8" mid bass in the doors of it.

Just make sure you deaden the snot out of those doors and panels. They tend to rattle like a mofo.

Look forward to seeing your progress and pictures.

thanks man, me too! :) staying on track is hard because of work but hopefully I will get some things rockin and rollin soon.

Are you talking about the Hybrid Audio Technology 3 and 8? I have been looking at their stuff a bunch. A little out of my price range but it looks good.

What processor do you use for your active setups or do you just use the headunit?

My suggestion...

If you can fit an 8"up front...do it. Get a DIY driver and run it active (bandpass) from the 80prs.

Then get a DIY 3" for the dash and a DIY tweeter of your choice. Source or build some crossovers. Or simply add a capacitor to the tweeter and wire it inline with the 3". You can still use the time alignment on the mids but you may need an "L"pad on the near side tweeter.

Those are all budget minded drivers. You can step up the performance if you want to spend double or triple.... but not by much.

Tweeters... well... there's whole shit load of awesome tweets out there. It'll depend on how much you want to spend and what you can fit or where you want to mount them.

Edit: Don't let the meager power handling on the 3's worry you. They will take some clean power, but you really don't need a ton pf power to get those things singing. My buddy runs 150w per side to his Fountek 88's and they can get loud as balls.

I was looking at the Faital Pros and the PRV drivers. I have a set of PRVs in some speakers I just built and I really like them. I have some 4ohm vifa tweeters sitting around from that project that didn't blend well with the PRVs so I may try them.

And an 8" shouldn't be an issue. I am cutting out the stupid plastic grills that are on them that whoever had the car before me scratched and put a hole through and turn them into enclosures. I was even thinking of trying to figure out how to do a ported enclosure in the door with some fiberglass. But that would be a first for me...So ya know as usual starting off biting off more then I can chew but we'll see.

Now I need a 1-ohm stable class-d amp that puts out 700+RMS (Looks like I am at the $200-280 price point not bad for decent brands like RF. Although I have no idea who to go with at the moment. I've run alpine in the past because they are good quality/consistent/good class d product). And a decent 2 channel amp. Although I may just run the mids off the headunit because they need 20watts RMS.

Also I need to download some software for a laptop setup. I have a audiotechnica condenser microphone already that has a 1/8" jack so I will probably just use that to RTA and get it dialed in. But I have a LONG way to go before I have this thing installed.

Researching sound deadening at the moment.

I am an Alpine fan so I run the PXAH800 and a INAW910 in my 300, a PXAH701 and DVA9861 in my silverado and a PXAH701 and IVAD105 for my s10. That being said a real nice simple piece is JBL's MS8, it really is a nice set it and forget piece of equipment. Mosconi 6TO8 and Audison BITONE pieces are excelent as well. If you want even more control pick up the ARC AUDIO PS8.

For the money the older Alpine PXAH701 is great. You can find them used for around $200-$400 with and without the controller or use a head unit that can control it (like I do).

Processing and clean amplifiers can do wonders with speakers (as well as adding a subwoofer). Figur out the source unit and your processing and build your system around that. I ended up ripping out a bunch of ZAPCO symbalink in my 300 when I put the Alpine in. as nice as the cable was it didin't work with Alpine's Ainet PLUS i went fiber optic too.

Appreciate it! I am looking into the Arc and the JBL too. So about the fiber optic is that for running just audio signals to the amps? or for running on fiber cable from the front to the back where all the components are located? I have see the SPIF connectors but not actual fiber yet.

(I live in the tech world so I am really familiar with fiber but haven't seen any components/HUs that have fiber on them)

Thats only for signal from the head unit to the processor. Then processor use rregular RCA signal cables.

The ARC audio amps take cat five inputs for signals via there adapters. Zapco uses simalair cable as well (symbalink). The Cat 5 is nice as it is balanced as well as you can easily customze the lengths. Of course all cables can be customized but, iknow cat 5 is easily available.

I'll have to look at some of the zapco stuff a little bit more. I looked at the JBL MS8 and about had a heart attack at the price but I see why. Just hard to swallow on what I would describe as a "simple" upgrade for my car. I'll get there though...I am already looking at some different options.

Fiber would make it so there was not intereference or interactions from RCAs or power wires which would be nice and would be SUPER small compared to three runs of RCAs.

But I think I need to focus on imaging and the cleanliness of my install at the moment. I am a novice at fab work, and working with plastic is not more strong suit so I gotta learn a bit more, watch some more videos. I think I am going to glass the pods in the doors and do a tear drop enclosure on the dash so I can get on-axis alignment and had them be close to parallel with my 8s in the door.
