Looking to switch to 5.1 surround in my room, need some opinions!

Recommended Posts

So right now i kind of a frankenstein system as everything was bought used but it sounds good right now. but i'm looking at buying a new receiver at my work, so the new receiver i'm hopefully gonna get is this one http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH550-5-2-Channel-Receiver/dp/B00J30GXW2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408158431&sr=1-1&keywords=sony+5.2+receiver

for front speakers i'm gonna be using two Polk Audio Monitor 7s, but that's all i'm really sure on, so i have a pair of KLH 911B that i could use for rear speakers but wasn't sure if that would work, more than likely gonna replace the mids on those because the surrounds got screwed up, but i'm also gonna need to figure out something for a center channel. So this setup is gonna be mainly for music and some video games if that makes any difference, just looking for some tips because the only surround sounds i've ever used were theaters in box! thanks in advance!

Edit: thought i should also mention this is for my bed room so kind of limited on space if that makes a difference!

First off, the only thing Sony makes that is good, are tv's.

For a home audio receiver, go with Onkyo.

I have Onkyo and haven't had the best experiences with it. First off, it is EXTREMELY finicky when switching between inputs. I usually have to turn it AND the TV off to successfully switch inputs. Also, I have noticed that my particular Onkyo receiver is fairly quiet even when set at 50 volume.

Don't get me wrong, I have heard good Onkyo systems, so I guess the success is hit or miss depending upon which model you choose.

Current Setup: 2002 Ford Focus SE (stock electrical)

-Kenwood Excelon KDC-X397

-Infinity Kappa 6x9's in each door

-Rockford Fosgate Prime R1200-1D

-2 12" Rockford Fosgate P3D2

Backups:

-12" Power Acoustik Mofo-122X in 36hz T-Line box

-Soundstream Piasso P1.1200D

yep, sounds like something is wrong with your current receiver.

A 50 watt Onkyo will be twice as loud as a 100 watt Sony.

Either get your receiver fixed or get a new Onkyo.

edit" I have had now 4 onkyo's over the past year, without one issue. I have given two away to my boys. And i still run the one i bought in 92, it's a frick'n beast. Sounds great and the power is phenomenal.

I wasn't putting down Onkyo, just my specific receiver lol. A buddy of mine has an Onkyo 7.1 and his works flawlessly. But I do know for fact that it is not uncommon for Onkyo's to eventually act up on the HDMI circuit board.

I have an Onkyo reciever that you can check out in my home dipole project in my signature.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

Thanks for the suggestion on the onkyo receiver but i'm pretty much sticking with the sony because i can get one for 90 bucks brand new in the box, so maybe i should of worded it differently, but my main question was will the klh speakers work as rear fill or should i try to find some thing else?

THIS IS BASED OFF OF ONE SET THAT I HAD... but my KLH speakers that I had (bookshelf) appeared to lack in the bass, obviously, as well as highs. I was expecting them to be pretty good at the highs, but they seemed a bit murky. Maybe I just had too high of expectations for them.

I would, just based on my past experiences, invest in Onkyo bookshelf speakers. They are pretty good at the highs, they seem to emulate the bass fairly well, and they seem to complete the "surround" effect the best so far. Again, this is only based on my experiences. I'm sure there is many many other better options but I haven't ventured too far.
