Sundown X-12 in girlfriend's 2010 Jeep Liberty

Recommended Posts

Well it's been a while since i've posted here, so I figured i'd start off again with a small build log in my girlfriend's Jeep. Equipment being used is a Sundown X-12 I had her pick up close to a year ago from the Sundown Yard Sale thread. She picked it up for $175.00. It was labeled as a bad spider, but when we got it there was a small 1" section where the spider lifted maybe 1/8" while the glue was curing, so I added a small bead of CA glue over it and feel it should hold just fine. It will be ran off of a Shark shkamp2500 at 1-ohm with a Kinetik HC1800 battery in the rear. Probably use a run of Knukoncepts 1/0 CCA wire for power. Anyway, on to the pictures.

Haven't taken any recent pictures but here are a few from when it came into the shop.

Next to one of my 12" DC XL's.

Love the surrounds on these.

Now onto the box design...

I'm actually pretty excited for this build since it's a birthday present for her and she hasn't the slightest clue she's finally going to get to use this sub since she got her new vehicle a few months ago! Also finally had an excuse to make my first kerf port as well. Anyway, more pictures.

Fiberglass and bondo aren't really in the budget right now so I filled the gaps with Titebond II before making the bend then after the bend I just spread out what oozed out. Added another layer on top after it cured for a day. With the securing screws on either side of the kerfed piece and bracing the inner portion of the port, I really don't see strength being a big issue in this case.

More to follow...

Google Chrome keeps randomly shutting down on me so I wanted to post before I lost everything for a third time... lol anyway.

After the glue was fully cured I just took some 150 grit sand paper and sanded the back side of the kerf down smooth.

Also ran the router over the end of the port to round it over.

Looking good so far!

Found this piece of stairway railing in the back so decided it would work well for a little extra port bracing.

Basically finished assembly minus the baffles tonight, want to see if I can get ahold of a plunge router to use a circle jig with since ours is not a plunge. Not sure if there's a simple solution to circle cutting with a non-plunge?

Anyway...

And finally hit all of the edges with the sander to try to blend all of the seams the best I could and rough up all of the sides since I intend to paint it once finished.

That's about as far as I got tonight. Need to pick up some wood filler and caulk before heading into the shop tomorrow. Would be nice to get assembly 100% finished, have all of the inside corners caulked, and fill and sand all screw holes tomorrow so I can start looking into what primers and paints I should use.

I use a non plunge router with my circle jig. I just set the depth and keep the motor loose and hold it up and turn it on and let it go into the wood running then lock it in place.

Nice looking box also!

New build coming........

lookin good bro! next box will be a nasty full kerf box !

Thanks man! And it definitely got my mind going on what I might try to implement in my car once I finally get around to building something new in it.

Hey thanks. And I might have to give that a try. Don't have the funds yet to buy my own router and boss cheaped out and bought a $60.00 Ryobi from Home Depot, gonna have to ask my buddy if I can borrow his circle jig and see if it mounts to the base right. (motor in his router decided to give up a few months ago) Thanks for the idea. :good:

2:00 a.m. just got back from the shop with a few more updates. Picked up some wood filler and silicone on the way in. Goal was to have it ready for paint tomorrow. Anyway...

Filled in all of the countersunk screw holes, let them dry, and sanded them down smooth.

20140816_230914_zps2d0fafdb.jpg

And finally got the baffles on. Ended up holding off the circle jig for now and just used the jig saw. Due to depth constraints the sub will not be flushed in with the top baffle so no need for a 100% perfect circle. Put the baffles on and did my best to blend them with the rest of the box. Would like to say it only took a few minutes but due to the 1980's table saw I used at a buddies house originally cutting the wood, all of the cuts were far from perfect. Probably spent a little over an hour with the palm sander hitting everything. lol

20140817_011137_zpsf81426bd.jpg

Also added a 1/2" roundover around the top. I was going to do the sides as well but decided i'm not going to risk hitting any of the closer screws to the sides.

Further prepping for paint, i've been doing a bunch of research on painting mdf and have picked up quite a few neat tricks. This one involved diluting wood glue and water in a 1:1 ratio. I was worried at first even remotely involving water with mdf but the test piece I used seemed to react just fine. The basic concept is to apply the mixture to all of the ends of the pieces as anyone may know, are absolutely horrid trying to paint since mdf is so damn porous.

And that will sit overnight to cure. I ended up using that sponge brush to make sure I got all of the edges as soaked up as I could. This should definitely help me during primer tomorrow. Anyway, a few more miscellaneous pictures I have...

Picked up a couple of these brass bolts and wing nuts for the subwoofer termination coming out of the enclosure.

20140816_231123_zps416b6b24.jpg

And the paint I decided to go with.

20140816_231156_zps85fff374.jpg

And next to something white to get a better idea of the color.

20140816_231225_zps2c18fa10.jpg

Took me forever to decide what paint and color to go with. Her Jeep is a dark green color. (technically called Natural Green Pearl) So to best match I have decided to go with a satin Hunters Green. From what I've read, trying to use gloss paint and get a perfect finish will just drive you nuts and it also picks up every little imperfection. The satin supposedly does a better job laying and it much easier to work with.

I'm pumped to finally dive into painting tomorrow but also maintaining the little patience i've managed to keep throughout this whole project. I've built at least 50 boxes over the last few years but this is the first one i've put so much time worrying about aesthetics. I'm really hoping she likes it once it's finally done. Again, she has not the slightest clue yet. Deadline is this Thursday on her birthday. Will probably brainstorm an amp rack and battery tray idea tomorrow as well.

Anyway, more updates to come tomorrow!
