remote gain ?

Is the remote gain on a amp a volume switch or is it actually a gain ? If it is a gain does it bypass the gain dial on the amp itself and if so would adjusting it not theoretically throw the amp into the clipping zone. Probably gonna catch a lot of are you a dumb ass replies from this question but I really dont understand why you would set gains so you dont clip then go cranking on a remote gain

Typically a remote gain adjusts the gain from the lowest setting to wherever you have the gain set on the amp.

It's a rheostat that allows for the adjustment of input signal to them amp thus increasing or decreasing it's output
