Broke_Audio_Addict Posted March 28, 2015 Report Posted March 28, 2015 Do you know what the specs are on the ported box you currently have? What exact amp are you using? Here is a couple things to think about. Changing out to a 400 watt amp is probably going to be a waste of money. If the amp you have now puts out a real 300 watts, you will never hear the difference between 300 watts and 400 watts. You need to at least double the power if you want to actually hear a difference. The sub you have really isn't meant for ported boxes. It has a really low EPB (29), low Fs, and higher QTS. All of these attributes make it much more appropriate for a sealed box. You just aren't going to get good sound out of that sub in a ported box no matter what you do. You don't have to take my word for it either, if you look on Rockford's webpage for that sub, you will see under their "BoxAdvisor" that they recommend it goes in a sealed box. The problem with a sealed box is while it will almost definitely make the sub sound better, its not going to make it sound louder. Given your goals of nice sound and deep bass my suggestion to you would be to sell that sub and get something more appropriate for a ported box. Subs that will work well in ported boxes and are roughly in the price range of your P2-15 are an SSA Dcon 15, FI X15, and Alpine SWS-15. If you want to upgrade your amp I'd go up to something in the 750 watt range (or higher if budget permits). Both Rockford and Soundqubed have good 750 watt amps for reasonable prices. Rockford actually recommends a sealed and a ported enclosure for the sub and while it might not seem like it to you on paper they actually do perform well in both types of enclosure. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

This is right off of RF's website: While I know they don't say NOT to use a ported box, does that graph really look like they are recommending a ported box or a sealed box to you? What do you think it implies about that sub's performance in a ported box? As far as them "performing well", that's a pretty subjective thing. If you listen to music that doesn't have much bass below about 45 hz, they probably do sound fine. There is a LOT of music that fits that description. However if you want to hear the low bass this sub is not going to perform well in a ported box. The subs are rated for 400 watts RMS 800 watts peak. Its a lot harder to overpower subs on music with reasonable power than you would think as long as it is getting a clean signal (no clipping). Like a said before, going from 300 to 400 watts isn't going to make a noticeable difference at all. mcocagne3 Posted March 28, 2015 Author Report Posted March 28, 2015 as of right now I am planning on building a new ported box for it so it fits in the back of the jeep better because the ported box that i have now looks out of place now that I removed my spare tire carrier from the back that it was sitting under.

Maybe try out different ports and sizes to get the sound you want boss 1200 and a ipod nano.
