nogispl Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 Hello everybody, new to the site and fairly new to the audio world. But I learn fast. Well my question is, I have a hifonics gladiator 1400, and recently got a dd-1 to do everything right on the gain and max HU volume and after following the steps for the dd-1 (2x because I thought I messed up) I decided to check the Vac on the amps output, it read 50.76 vac which is 2576 rms doing the vac^2 formula. The dd1 said this was maximum clean signal on amp, but with the readout being that high I'm baffled. I spoke with a damore rep and said I was right because of no load on amp and the overlap, but alot of people say the glx1400.1d wasnt that good that's why it was discontinued, so what gives? Sorry about the long post just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thanks for any help or advice you guys can give.

reedal Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 Squaring your output voltage doesn't give you power. So no, your amp is not putting out almost double power. The closest way to calculate what your amplifier outputs is to use the power wheel formulas, and even that's not completely accurate because it's AC, not DC. So take a reading of your output voltage, and multiply it by your output current, and that gives you "output power" (volt-amps). nogispl Posted April 16, 2015 Author Report Posted April 16, 2015 Ok thanks guys, I got all excited thought I had a factory freak from hifonics. So one more question, when people set gains with a dmm they use the square root of the rms times resistance of voicE coils. my amp is a 1400rms (on paper) but my sub is 1200 rms, I don't need headroom I only really show people my system with the same 2 or 3 songs anyways. And the rest of the times it's low. How can I check my output to make sure I'm not heating up my voice coils. Do i play the same -5 test tone at max HU volume and turn the amps gain down to 34 vac?
