one of meades videos got me thinking

You better go look at some factory wires and stare at the fusible link.

You also aren't fusing just to protect the wire I absolutely hate that statement especially when people are suggesting someone should fuse to their wires current carrying capability when their actual current demand is much less.

Seriously though, there is no reason to fuse an alternator. Oem manufacturers fuse any

Wire that could short on battery side only. You are probably looking at another fuse.

If they fused the alternator they would have to fuse at or above alternator rating. I've never seen a 150 a fuse in a car fuse box.

Also the rule is to fuse at or below the current capability of wire. Depends on what you need to run through it. It's mainly for he wire because people who put wires in hat will short one day didn't design or plan it out well. A wire should never short. That's just bad install.

Edit: if a wire does short the fuse protects wire from melting down rest of wire and starting fires along the wire.

The fuse can also limit if you are trying to draw too much through too small of a wire which will cause a dangerous situation

I'm not trying to make this an argument and definitely not my opinion.. Just stating what my stock ford expedition.. From alt to distribution block 4 gauge wire with a 175a ford fuse.from fuse to battery. Again I'm Not going against your post and you or your opinion

Indirectly the alt wire is fused. I understand your point. It really depends how they designed the system. At the end of the day the wire is protected from battery by fuses in case of shorts anywhere

What I was saying is that if you don't fuse to protect the wire and you fuse to protect the amp, then you're protecting both at the same time. If you're clipping the hell out of the amp and it's pulling over and going to the damage the amp then if you are fused to protect the wire and not the amp, then it will clip until it burns up. I like to use fuses kind of as indicators that something isn't right. Let's say your amp draws around ~150a, but you have 1/0 going to it and let's also say that someone that's a noob decides to crank the gain all the way up and at full tilt he's pulling ~160+ amps. If you fused to the wire (1/0) you will just sit there, keep clipping, and assume that everything is fine because the fuse hasn't blown, but if you had of fused a little above your amps average current draw then the fuse would have blown and you would have known that something wasn't right. So by fusing to protect the amp from over current you may have saved the amp somewhat and you've also saved the wire.

Just my thoughts.

does meade not fuse his alternator wires from the alternator, just at the buss bars in the back? to me it seems like he runs wires straight from the alternators to the buss bars in the back and I have no idea where he runs the negative wires that hook up to the buss bars. maybe someone can shed some light.

Lol nope wasnt me but i could see why there is a lot of confusion with similar threads im more curious what certain people are doing and why. It just happens your build logs show a lot of aspects of car stereo. The fuse is there for the wire some auto manufacturers fuse certain things and some dont i am still debating if i should fuse up front but with so many people only fusing near battery bank in back its tempting not to. Im more worried about insulation getting torn or it gets some friction wear by the firewall. Anybody have thoughts on multiple alts to n up front battery then to a large battery bank? Im thinking running all that power to a single battery post and then to a battery bank cant be good for that up front battery even if all the current is going to the bank

Just read this whole thread and the info was great. i was recently told by someone who repairs amps, to fuse it lower than recommended to protect it. Im glad i read this instead of just listening to him.

If the thread continues or I missed something, please talk about runs to a second battery, to bus bar, then to amp's fuse placement. Weather you run after the big 3 from the alternator to the second battery or run them both in parallel. I've seen it done both ways. I like Meade's video on Moke's Chevelle so this was a very interesting thread. Just want to get y'alls opinion. I love my car too much... B)
