Recone

When do you guys decide to recone your subs? my 9900 is reading 1.5 ohms right now. its a dual .5 voice coil wired series. is it time to recone or should i play it till i dies? also if a sub bottoms out does it damage the motor is does the voice coil take all the abuse?

I think its time for a recone if your coil is bottoming out.

I think you have other things going on such as a torn spider, or a broken triplejoint glue job.

If it use to read .5ohms per coil or 1ohm in series and it now reads 1.5 something could be loose, or if you have a torn spider or triplejoint failure it could cause the coil to sit at a weird position causing the spike in the ohms.

Best thing to do would be take the woofer out of the box, inspect the spiders, inspect the triple joint (where the spiders, cone and voice coil all get glued together.
Also disconnect the coils from each other, and test each coil by itself to see if they are reading .5 or something higher on their own.
Without checking it out of the box like this, it could be something as simple as a loose speaker wire connection inside the box.

Also bottoming out a voice coil will not effect the motor in any way, that is steel. your voice coil is usually made of a thin stainless steel former which has copper or aluminum voice coil winding wrapped around it and some white paper like material which make the voice coil. Coils are somewhat fragile and can bend from bottoming them out or jumping the gap, they can bubble/warp and become deformed from too much heat, too much heat can also cause the glue that holds the actual windings to the voice coil former fall off or slinky.

Id have to say its time for a recone for sure if these issues are happening, and if you have 2 woofers and they share a common chamber it be best to recone the other woofer because that one wont be far behind in terms of condition and starting to fail.

Its a single 18. i bought it off ebay. the guy advertised at as perfectly functioning woofer. i received it damaged. the lower portion of the triple joint was torn. i reglued as per dd's instructions. it has played so far but it sounds like it is bottoming out. in a noob so its hard to say for sure. i am saving up for a recone. it will happen soon.

i have been trying to figure this out. i hope a recone fixes it. i can live with that. a shit sub would suck.

A recone is all new softparts (cone, surround, voice coil, spiders, and dust cap).

They are typically all glued together for you so all you have to do is apply glue to the spider landing and surround landing on the basket, as well as glue on the dust cap.

A properly clean basket and properly shimming the voice coil is a must.

With a recone it should be as if it was a brand new woofer minus the reused magnet and basket.

You only get 1 shot at doing a recone, and its pretty simple but very complicated for some at the same time.

I believe DD will recone it for a fee if you send the woofer in.
