So I haven't built a computer in like 7 years.. Motherboard and my 8800GTX took a shit on me the other day so I figured I'd rebuild everything. I mainly want to play CS:Go and BF4.. Nothing else that I can think of but if something new comes out I'd like to play it.

How does this sound?

Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Killer

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Quad Core

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212+

Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro (2x8GB) 1866 DDR3

HDD: Kingston V300 240GB SSD

Video Card: MSI GeForce 970 4GB

I've said this before. Get an HDD for backups and bulk storage. SSD should be used for OS and games. Make a backup schedule and system image of the SDD to the HDD. You can get a 1TB WD Blue for like $50-$60 on Newegg sales.

Only place I've heard of SSD being used as storage is high class enterprise networks that move tons of data 24/7.

I'd bump that ram to the next highest model/speed (2133MHz) if you can afford it. If not, overclock at your own risk.

The 970 had some issue of VRAM being limited to 3.5GB. So, you won't see that 4GB. Not a big deal, really good card. If you want to consider AMD, I own the PowerColor 290 PCS+ and it's a great card. Handles BF4, GTA5, and Skyrim maxed out. All I really play =)

Other than those recommendations, you have a solid system that'll last at least another 5yrs before upgrading some parts.

I also recommend Corsair and Fractal Design cases. Noticed you didn't have a case listed.

Before you do anything, i'd check if you have a Microcenter in your area. If you do... you want to get your motherboard and processor from there. It's cheaper to buy it from there than anywhere else.

This is Q3 of 2015, the AMD 990 chipset came out back in 2011, it's out dated and AM3+ is no longer AMD's focus. If you go AMD, you will want to go for their FM2+ CPU's instead, their chipsets are more updated and have newer features that will last longer than AM3+... Something like the A10-7870K. But i'd stay away from the AM3+ stuff... Even Intel's G3000 series pentiums are better for gaming... and those are in the $50 range.

I would recommend this processor instead:

or the i5 4690K if you can get it from microcenter

This motherboard:

This RAM:

This SSD:

or

With Intel processors, you won't even need to spend money on a after market cooling solution, i'd drop the CM HSF.

I just put together a computer with that motherboard, processor and RAM. I was pleasantly surprised how powerful it was when comparing it to my i7 4790K system. Again... If you have a microcenter... i'd go there first since they will actually price match Newegg pretty competitively... They don't price match everything, like... RAM for instance... But they do for a lot of other components.

This is all very true. Coming from a 8800GTX, doesn't seem like he upgrades very often. He probably would game on the AM3+ until his system dies. FM2+ would be a thing in the past when he's ready to upgrade lol

The 7870k is another great option. I have the 7850k. Beast machine.

Do not get a 240GB SSD, you will install your OS, and maybe a game or two. If that. I have a 256gb and am lucky to have 3 games installed at 1 time.

Well, I still have a 1TB Raptor drive from my old computer I'll be using. I built my current computer over 7 years ago when I was a teenager lol.

I think I'm going to step up to the FX-9590

Lol....definitely don't get an APU if you are also getting a dedicated GPU.

Couldn't open that comparison link at school...I have a feeling I know what it will say. But when it comes down to it the 8350 (especially with some OC) is going to keep up with only marginal performance differences in real world applications. Even moving up to a 4690K, or 6600K, isn't going to make a noticeable difference most, if not all the time.

Don't know what all that shit about AM3+ being outdated is about either, it's not like Intel chipsets are changing drastically from one revision to the next...

From the looks of the games he wants to play, an APU would be fine with the option to upgrade with a dedicated GPU or "dual graphics" later. I have an APU running with a 290. Works fine. Didn't note if he wanted to run anything above 1080p, so I'd pick whichever is cheaper in my opinion.
