cocoleveo7686 Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 so i finally figured out my dimensions by building a demo box. I pictured 2 different things i did in Torres. Both would be for 2 12's Havent decided on which and i know that can make a difference but i want to tune to around 33 hz here is the first its a slot port. I know there is more port area but less cubes than if i did an aero or octoport here is what i made for an aero, I know theres less port area but more cubes to work with for 2 12's i also just realized 1 is .44 displacement for subs another is .36 But which would you choose for 2 12's and why? Will the bigger box make up in sound for the port area? Since the aero or octo is more efficient is that a better diagram for 2 12s, I do know the length would be 19" for aero and the depth of box is only 21. Didnt really wanna have any bends but Need some good opinions. Thanks guys!
ToNasty Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 Knowing what subs is needed. Certain subs like more area some like less ***Super Sellers List***http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/25829-super-sellers-buyers
everybodyknowme Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 It's hard to determine if these specs are good without knowing what subs your using. Like he said certain subs like more port area or less net area, etc. Also will you be under powering or over powering the woofers. There are many factors to include when building a box but at least I can say it looks like you have figured out how to use torres.
cocoleveo7686 Posted November 8, 2015 Author Report Posted November 8, 2015 Having a hard time figuring out which subs i am going to use. But i was looking at ampere audio 3.0 and a few others. Id be powering them no more than 300-500 watts rms clean power at most. Guess i was trying to figure things out or understand. I do know each sub uses diff amounts of port area like sundown x like 40sq in but if u have 2 80sq in of port is really hard to get and fit 2 12s in the space i have i believe
Triticum Agricolam Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 So making the box bigger will not "make up for" having less port area than you need. In fact making the box bigger will make inadequate port area problems worse since port velocity increases as you increase net volume. With that being said, if you are only going to be putting 600-1000 watts (is that correct?) to this box you won't need 80 sq in of port. On that power 50 sq in would still be plenty. If you are looking at subs in the 300-500 watt RMS range my recommendations would be JBL GTO1214 (if you can find a pair) or Sundown E-series. No i am gonna be running 3400 rms. but i havent decided 100% the subwoofers i wanna buy. I thinnk you got confused bc i was asked if i would be running more than rms to the subs so that also depends. So i guess i really need to decide on subwoofers then see what port area they like? What do you recommend for port area if im running 3400 rms? Is that still 100% dependent on subwoofer? I like the ampere audio 3.0 for the price and power rating. Cant really find any other subs for around 350 each that look as good as those. Only problem is theres not too much info on them. So if the sub recommends lets say 50 sq in of port total and i have the option to run 5.0 cubes with 50 sq inches of port or 4.3 cubes with 60 square inches which would u do? I am trying to learn as much as possible before spending alot on subwoofers
Triticum Agricolam Posted November 9, 2015 Report Posted November 9, 2015 Yeah what threw me off was when you said this: ...Id be powering them no more than 300-500 watts rms clean power at most.... If you are going to be running 3000+ watts you are probably going to want to be in the area 80 sq in of port. As as how much port area you need, the biggest factors are going to be how much cone area you have, the size of the box, the amount of power you are running, and the tuning frequency. Assuming all of those are the same there is going to be slight differences between different model subs, but its not going to be a huge difference. When it comes to port area, I'm kind of a port area zealot. Port compression kills output so I would definitely prefer a smaller box that had enough port area vs a bigger one that didn't have enough port area. That being said, once your box has enough port area, adding more does nothing, it only wastes space, so you need to have an idea of what the right amount is. I know most 12's like atleast 2 cubes
Triticum Agricolam Posted November 9, 2015 Report Posted November 9, 2015 Losing .5 cubes of airspace will cost you a lot less output than port compression will.
