katastrophi Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Hi im in the process of installing component speakers/tweeters in my 2013 gmc terrain. My truck comes stock with 6 speakers. My question is do i buy 6 interior speakers with tweeters and can i use them without a crossover. I notice component sets come with speaker tweeter crossover. I am using a deh 80prs deck. Not sure if i need crossovers or not. I have a 4ch and 2ch amp ill be using for speakers/tweeters. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. If you have any queations about the equipment ill be using i can give names if it helps better. Head Unit: Pioneer DEH-80PRSSpeakers: Hertz esk 165l5
Amp: Soundqubed Q2-200
aculous Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 yes you can run them without the passive crossover as long as you are using a active crossover on the amps or headunit. Personnaly I would run component sets, I think they sound better and give you more options. If you are going to run "active" and not have the passive crossovers hooked up you are going to have a lot more time in tunning your setup but should get a better result in the long run. It takes a lot of time to figure it out so it may just be easier to run passive. Also if you are going to run active you MAY want to look into a measurement mic and Room EQ Wizard to get a little more info on what your settings effect in the car. Once you get used to your setup a little bit and have a little more time and maybe a SMD CC-1 you can jump into crossover settings on the on the amp. Or just start learning about different crossover slopes and mess with them on the 80prs.

aculous Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 whats the config in the car? And are you running these all in the stock locations or are you making door panels or something? I would run active using the HU's crossover settings, run the amps crossover at full. Set the gain low on the amps until you can tune it properly or set the gains right. Maybe buy or borrow a DD-1. Get real comfortable with that 80prs, it has a ton of options but the manual kinda sucks IMHO. I found a couple youtube clips that were helpful.
katastrophi Posted January 13, 2016 Author Report Posted January 13, 2016 I work for a audio/visual company, so i dont need the dd-1 i have a spectrum analyzer, function generator, and oscilloscope. The 80prs ive had for a while never used it to its full advantage. This time i definitely will. If i dont have the passive crossovers do i just run the tweeters and speakers to a amp and from my amp to the head unit ill be buying 1 or 2amps for 2 12s ill be putting in the truck after i get speakers/tweeters installed. reedal Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Yes, wire the speakers and tweeters directly to amps, amps to head unit for active crossovers. katastrophi Posted January 13, 2016 Author Report Posted January 13, 2016 Where i get confused is when i add subs thats another amp or two how would i plug it into the HU too. Sorry this will be the first time going full active in vehicle. Head Unit: Pioneer DEH-80PRSSpeakers: Hertz esk 165l5
Amp: Soundqubed Q2-200
reedal Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 The 80prs has 3 sets of outputs. First, you need to set the switch located on the HU's chassis to network mode if you haven't already. The order of the RCA preouts from top to bottom changes to high, mid, low. Connect the low to the sub amp, the mid to the mids amp, and the high to the highs amp. Since you plan on using a four channel, two channel, and two(?) sub amps, you will need Y-splitters (one female to two male), or a Scott Bowman Cockbox which does the same thing as splitters but it looks prettier Use the Y-splitters for the signals going to the four channel and your two sub amps. Personally, I recommend a single amp for your subs. katastrophi Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 Quick question about the tunning phase. How would i separately tune my tweeters? Say i have 4 tweeters total how do i eq them individually if my 80prs only has a L/R rca out on it i would need 4 outputs to tune them individually correct, not just that L/R.
