Between the supercaps and the NVX cap, the supercaps would be more beneficial I think, as most of the consumer oriented car audio capacitors aren't worth much at all. But neither are needed in my opinion. It's a low-power/low-current draw system, with a good sized alt to power it without any issues. If he wants to have more reserve capacity on tap, then I'm sure there's plenty of room under the hood in that old truck to add a second battery tray for another optima.

if you run the NVX, make sure its very close to the amp, less than 6". It will give you the most benefit that way. Not that you need it.
