You don't have to crank it to the max, it's all about that headroom.

Sound quality always benefits from having extra power on tap.

instead of stressing every watt out of an amp a slightly bigger amp wont have to work as hard to produce the same, makes sense.

Yes and the less gain you use the better off you are.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

See the dd-1 is great and all but there isn't always a need to crank the gain to the max clean setting.

It's still useful to know where your head unit distorts at though.

Inb4 shit storm.

I tuned my HU and amp with a DD-1 my kenwood exceleon plays 35/35 clean.

I could buy a 2500 watt and tune with a DD-1 to find max clean gain setting and just mark it, then tune it lower to 1800 or 2000 watts.

We all have tuned with a DMM or by ear before (not everyone in the 90's 2000's were using oscopes) hell frys electronics, best buy and custom sounds local to me all tune by ear i know because i called snd asked. But since ive been introduced with the DD-1 im glad to know max clean settings and i can always tune down :)

It's for sure a good tool that gives very useful information but I think the mistake people make with it is thinking they need to leave it cranked to the max, you can still blow shit with clean power.

Maybe if the box was way too big or tuned wrong. Putting 3-4 times rated power on a speaker will cause too much heat and bottom out the sub causing it to fail early.

There is a lot more too it than that, a lot more.

I've give you one to look into, power compression.
