Qts and qms

Recommended Posts

Ive read many articles that state, that subwoofers that have low qts and qms numbers are better sound quality subs, is there any validity to this? If that is so, what can i do to make a sub that doesnt have what people are saying is "ideal" qts and qms values (qts of .40 and lower, qms of 7 and lower) sound loud with good sq?

QTS and QMS aren't really quality measurements, they measure how quickly the sub dissipates energy. They have more to do with what type and size of a box the sub is going to perform best in more than anything.

If you're starting out with T/S parameters, start with Qts. This just explains with a number figure the ability of the motor structure to control the cone. Basically, the lower the Qts, the more control the motor has over the cone. This can be loosely used to judge a subs ability to perform in a given type of enclosure.

<0.4 better ported or 6th order

Now before someone gives me shit over it, these are just starting figures. Plenty of ported systems run subs over .4 Qts and then there are some great sounding sealed boxes with subs under .4. Until you understand the relationship, this is a good starting point for you.

I prefer .5+ for 4ths, but agree with the rest.

Another thing to consider is EBP, which is fs/qes. .55 and under is better suited for 4ths.

No I get it, and also depends on what kind of cabin gain you're working with too. Just giving him some starting off points.

OP, this is what I meant by "starting off"... your experience will give you your own mind-track on how Qts and Qes works, and what works for you.

It's old school, but i like WinISD beta. It's basic and free, which works. There are lots of box building apps out there but I like this because it's output is predictable.

WinISD and Hornresp are free. Between the two of them they should do 99.6% of anything you would want to do. You would just need to put in the effort to learn how to use them. HornResp requires a bit more effort than WinISD does.
