n00b question regarding sound

here are the dimensions of the box that is in there now, the sub and port are both aiming back

height : 14.5 inches

width 27.75 inches

depth 1 top: 12 inches

depth 2 bottom: 16 inches

slot port measurements:

height: 13 inches

width 2.5 inches

I wanted to focus on your current box specs, without knowing port length one can't know tuning but just for a guess say it's 40 Hz as it's often the case with prefabs, your box specs would be: 1.4 cubic feet net (with the 2 SA12s installed), port area 32.5 square inches.

If anything that would work for one SA-12 but never two, if you wanted to do a proper box around that size for two SA12s it would need to be sealed or a box a single SA-12 ported.

yes this is being used for single 12 not both.

having said that, is it worth redesigning and building a new box for a single sa12 or is the one im using now close enough that its not necessary?

Without knowing the port length it is impossible to tell tuning but a small, way high tuned box should be unpleasant to listen to, can't tell if that's bothering you or something else though.

im assuming this box is tuned in the mid / upper mid 30 range hence why the drum n bass, rap, dubstep sounds real loud and the rest of the genres like trance, rock, etc that tend to have bass in the 40s-50s sound weak.

The box has a big peak and then goes down real quick.

I believe this is the problem.

Is it possible to redesign the box so that its more of a flat response where everything sounds nice ?

you can get a good response from a regular ported box. Not only is it hard to get a premade box sound good with a sub that it was not designed for you bought a 4th order which is a tricky b!tch to begin with. i would either build a 4th designed for the subs you have or just build a bandpass box and pound away.

sorry if there is some confusion, but my plan was to build a 4th inside my trunk for 2 sa12s. Since my installer was too busy i was unable to do that. So just to get some bass while i wait, i found a SINGLE 12 ported box online which was custom made for an audiobahn i believe and i bought and used that for a SINGLE 12.

This single 12 box i bought seems to be tuned in the mid 30s...

what i do want to know is, if its possible to remake this box for a single 12 (ported) and have more of a flat response so that there is a wider band of freq that all songs sound good instead of just the stuff that has low bass like dnb and dubstep ...

If you find the SA-12 peaky at 1.4 net you should just close the port so that the sub is run as in a larger sealed box, likely this will fix your problem for you, you see the ported box is going to be louder where you apparently don't want it to be.

what is the actual recommended net for a single sa 12?

i will try closing the port and seeing what that does.

Ok make sure that port is completely blocked an see how it goes, the box may be between 1.4-1.7 net, can't tell you for sure because you don't provide the length of the port and therefore how much space takes up BUT I wouldn't be concerned as the smaller the box the the less peaky it will play.
