Design for One 10" Sub

Recommended Posts

A digital multi-meter is a very cheap and useful tool, you should get one. This one will do the job just fine: https://www.amazon.com/Resistance-Frequency-Auto-ranging-Multimeters-Capacitance/dp/B00O1Q24DA/

To see where the high (and low) pass filters are you would play a sine wave frequency in the middle of the pass band, like 60 Hz. With the subwoofer disconnected you would measure the A/C voltage coming out of the amp. Take that voltage and multiply it by .707. While leaving the volume constant, decrease (or increase) the frequency of the sine wave tone while watching the voltage. When the voltage drops to the value your calculated (original voltage * .707) that is the frequency of the crossover.

Oh ok, that's pretty easier than I was expecting. I plan on getting one this Christmas. I'm asking for tools. On that note, what is a pretty decent one that you would recommend? It doesn't have to be super fancy with every bell and whistle but enough to cover most everything someone would normally need to do with good reliability and also last a while.

The multimeter I have is a Fluke 12e+. Its not cheap, but it will probably outlast me. You can get them on eBay:

I don't mind spending some money if it's going to be a quality product (within reason of course). I'll look into that one that you linked to. On another note, do you know if Parts-Express usually has pretty good Black Friday/Cyber Monday discounts? Want to know if I can possibly get the sub for cheaper.

Got the sub in today along with an assortment of cables and what not! Had my girlfriend open the sub box up and look at it. She likes it. Was honestly a little shocked at the sub itself. Definitely not what i'm use to in terms of quality granted it is a $72 driver and not meant for lots of power/xmax so I guess it's justified. Quality being that the spiders seemed a bit papery to me, the cone/dustcap aren't as sturdy and the basket is pretty thin. Again, i'm not disappointed or mad. I understand it being what it is because of what it is. I can't wait to hear this thing but it'll be a long way out for that. Have to wait till I get home for winter break to start building the box (no tools of my own here at school). Then, once i'm done with the box, I have to wait until break is over until I can install the speaker and hear it playing. The anticipation will be killing me. I also have to go to the store and get some different connectors. Thought the terminal cup I bought used ring connectors but I was mistaken. Could someone tell me what this will use? I'll post a pick after i'm off desk. It's not like the picture showed on parts-express website. This is the terminal I bought for reference but, like I said, it's not the same.

Sturdy feeling spring loaded terminals. I believe they fit up to 8awg wire

Wasn't too enthused by the spiders. Again, seem kinda cheap to me but oh well. You get what you pay for and I can't really judge yet seeing as it has no play time.

Basket is pretty thin but this is also like a 12 pound sub running off of 200W so it doesn't need to be built like a tank.

Reference for how big it is...I guess. It's a 10" sub. Pinky to thumb is 8.5"

This is what I was talking about with the not so sturdy dust cap. I'm lightly pushing as to not cause any actual damage but you can see the light bending where the dust cap is pushing in.

Something I noticed that's really not that big of a deal. The plate that the terminals are on is a bit cockeyed.

Getting a nice picture of that booty.

Overall pretty pleased with my purchase. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like!

Nice goodies! That black stuff looks like liquid electrical tape almost. Can probably undo that and just do ring terminals.

I love my dayton 6.5s I use for midbass drivers, but they are constructed the same as those woofers. Very fragile speakers, I have one that the surround was smushed in storage but still plays with no problems

Those are for spade connectors, but you can probably undo that nut and clamp down a ring terminal.

Okay, i'll try it out and see if it works. Thank you, appreciate the response

That's what I do with those style of terminal cups. Just be sure to secure the nut back down with something after you attach the ring terminals, they like to work loose. I use a dab of hot glue from a hot glue gun.
